George Marshall (owner) named them "Redskins" in honor of then coach William Henry "Lone Star" Dietz , an American Indian, he claimed to be part Sioux!
I don't think it is fair that TD gets to vote on the Ravens logo one way or another.![]()
also true. i left out the intermediary names, but both the baseball & football teams were references to the men who dressed up as 'indians' and tossed a bunch of earl grey into the harbor.
Fact!!
Or at least according to Wikipedia!
Initially, the new team took the same name as their landlords, the Boston Braves, one of the two local baseball teams at the time. The Braves played their first game on October 2, 1932, under the leadership of coach Lud Wray, against the Brooklyn Dodgers, to whom they lost 14–0. The next week, the Braves recorded their first win, beating the New York Giants, 14–6. Despite the presence of two rookies; halfback Cliff Battles and tackle Glen "Turk" Edwards — the new franchise's losses during the first season reached $46,000 and Bendix, O'Brien, and Doyle dropped out of the investment, leaving Marshall the sole owner of the Braves. The team moved to Fenway Park (home of the Boston Red Sox) the next year, and Marshall changed the name to the "Redskins" apparently in honor of then-coach Lone Star Dietz, an American Indian (he claimed to be part Sioux, but his actual ancestry has been challenged).
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
lol
fact and wikipedia in the same sentence
They were already called the Braves which is a native American reference. How is changing the name to Redskins an honor to Dietz?
Wikipedia is always a great source.
how bout just go to redskins.com:
July 8, 1933
The Name: The team moves to Fenway Park, home of the American League’s Boston Red Sox, and “The Braves” become “The Redskins.”
July 9, 1932
The Beginning: George Preston Marshall heads a syndicate (with Vincent Bendix, Jay O’Brien and Dorland Doyle) that buys a NFL franchise for Boston. They contract to play at Braves Field, home of the National League baseball team, and are called “The Braves.”
K? ...but why? ...No reason?
Definitely that dumbass Cleveland Indians logo. Their franchise sucks pretty bad as well, lol.
if you read up on sports history, baseball was still king when football was up and coming.
Back then, football franchises that played in the same stadium as the local baseball team were named after them.
It's why they were originally the "braves".........because they played in the same stadium as the "braves".....
then they moved to Fenway Park, home of the "Red Sox"........but since Native Americans didn't wear socks......
I hope you can do the math from here on out.
you win.![]()
Yeah, i know all that but, why the change of name?
Just cuz they moved to Fenway!? Gotta be more to it, not just cuz they moved!!? They actually wanted to move to New York!
So you're sayin they just changed it just to change it!?!?
