keep only tim and tony.
the rest are expendable now, including 'el liability' Manu (RIP)
keep only tim and tony.
the rest are expendable now, including 'el liability' Manu (RIP)
My best guess, from Real GM
All right, next season. Let's group the players a bit (note that some people appear in more than 1 category)
1) Guaranteed Keepers (IMO)
Bigs - Duncan, Mahinmi
Wings - Hairston (yes, I think the Williams signing is the spurs playing games to stop Williams from being signed by someone else, whilst keeping Hairston as well)
PG - Parker, Hill
1.5) Only for a STRONG OFFER (We might shop some of these guys...One in particular)
Bigs - KT
Wings - Manu, Mason. Bowen
2) Trade Bait (happily move these guys as filler)
Bigs - Bonner, Oberto
Wings - Finley (I understand his no-trade will expire effetively after this season...)
3) Gone
Bigs - Gooden (I suspect he will get a decent offer, approaching the MLE, and we will be unwilling to spend that much for him), Oberto (if he is not traded for someone, his contract will almost assuredly be bought out for the savings and the roster spot)
Wings - Udoka (No upside, hasn't been good enough, need the roster spot...) Bowen (Similar to Oberto, if not traded, he will almost certainly be bought out for savings. I think he might be a strong candidate to bring back on a vet min after a buyout...)
PG - Vaughn
There are key issues 1) Big trade possibilities. Bowen and Oberto's partial guarantees make them potentially strong trade values in the current economic climate. At least one trade board suggestion has included Butler for Oberto and Bowen, just for the cap relief... (not saying that'd happen, but that is the kind of scale I am talking). Also, Manu is in the mix, see next. 2) Manu.1 HUGE ISSUE. When healthy, he's a massive difference maker. His injuries have scuttled championship shots in the last 2 years. No player, however talented, can win games in a suit on the sidelines...And he's taking up 10 million of our usable capspace. The big question is, does he feel enough (loyalty? guilt? championship hunger? whatever?) to re-sign cheap (ie MLE or so, 3 to 5 years) in 2010? If so, you keep him. If not, you have to look at moving him, due to his injuries.
Assuming Manu, KT and Mason stay, the core, not including trades looks like :
Bigs - Duncan, Mahinmi, KT
WIngs - Manu, Mason, Hairston
PG - Parker, Hill
Needs - 3 Bigs, 3 Wings, 1 PG.
For the Wings -
Bring in Gist at the Wing (similar contract to Hairston), Resign Bowen at the Vet min (after buyout, post trade), Last spot either filled by trade, or Finley, or draft pick/Nbdl/cheap veteran
For the Bigs -
Bring In Javtokas (LLE, 2 years), Lot of Possible variables - Pick 2 : a) Keep Bonner, b) get a big by trading Oberto, Bowen, and X c) Draft pick, d) NBDL/Cheap veteran (Birdman Anderson?)
For the PG - Pick 1 : a) Cheap Vet b) Marcus Williams (see the following madman http://www.48minutesof .com/2009/04/ ... int-guard/ )? Or other NBDL? c) Draft Pick
As you can see, I see one big trade, Bowen, Oberto, and either Bonner or Finley, for a significant wing or a big. Who, I don't know. Names like Tyson, Butler, even Dunleavy come to mind... Alternatively that might be for a not to bad contract (say 8 million, a serviceable player, and a draft pick or two ...). Or, we might see a smaller trade. Say Finley and a second to Denver for Balkman/ Kleiza (as a sign and trade), while Bowen and Oberto are simply payed off for the savings... But I definitely see some attempts at trades
I would also look at moving up in this draft. We don't really have a lot of roster spots available, so moving our 3 or so seconds for a late first might be a good idea. In particular, I am looking to the draft for either a serviceable wing or big... and to move Finley, because Pop's man love ends up mucking up the rotation. The roster ends up looking
Bigs - Duncan, KT, Mahinmi, Javtokas, Draft Pick/Player traded for, Bonner
Wings - Manu, Mason, Bowen (resigned), Hairston, Gist, Draft Pick/Player traded for
PG - Parker, Hill, Cheap veteran (Travis Deiner? James Hart? Mike James? Not Vaughn please...)
1. Don't scream at me about Manu being the heart of the team. If there was guy who was the HEART of the spurs for this dynasty, it was Bruce Bowen. We sidelined him this year, apparently for no reason. Tim, Manu and Tony were the talent, don't get me wrong. But Bruce was the heart of what it meant to play Spurs ball for this dynasty.
I think it would be interesting to try and make a move with the Wizards, either for Caron Butler, or a move for Blatche..
I have no idea what the Wizards financial situation looks like, so I'm just guessing here..their big 3 experiment hasn't worked out well, so they could blow up..they're most likely going to get a top 3 pick, which they'll have to pay, and probably want to pay big in the future..they have a few guys that they'll wanna keep in Haywood, Nick Young, McGee, maybe others..
Manu's contract ends this year, while Butler's doesn't end until the year after..
I'm just throwing that out there..if we could somehow pull off a deal involving Manu for Butler, I'd jump on it..
another option could be to package a combination of Thomas/Oberto/Bonner to get Andray Blatche, but that would probably require taking Deshawn Stevenson's bad contract in return..
I have no idea about their financial situation though, so I have no idea if they'd be interested in deals to help their cap and to unload contracts..I'm sure they could get a better offer for both..
Manu/Oberto for Richard Jefferson is a very realistic deal, but I'm not sure if I would want that..I'm not really a fan or RJ..
udoka, vaughn, and oberto......no disrespect to oberto.....he has heart but the spurs need more younger athletic big guys....
There really is no point in going young as long as Duncan is there.
If I'm SA, I do the same ol' same ol' next season. Add a guy like Sheed and hope to get lucky with a guy for the vet min. If you can get Sheed you let Gooden go. Only MLE to sign one.
If by mid-season its not working, I then offer Ks across the league to try to get a player (Vince Carter, etc..) from a team who wants 2010 cap space. SA will have nearly 30 mil in last year's including Ginobili. Make sure I don't take any K longer than Duncan's. So any K 2011/12 or shorter is good.
Come 2011/12 when Tim likely hangs them up, then you start anew with what's left.
Dude I would jump all over Caron butler in a trade like that. Caron is like exactly what the spurs need. RJ not so much-love him cuz hes a UA Cat but he just doesn't bring enough in return for manu. Caron for sure tho.
Anyone interested in Luol Deng from Chicago. He's had a lousy year, and wasn't that good the year before. With 9 bodies signed (not including Ben Gordon), they are at $64 million committed salary next year. I'm not sure if they have financial issues or not , but they could move him for pure expiring contracts (Say Oberto (buy out), Bowen (Buy out), and Finley ). Also, I understand the fan community isn't happy with his last 2 years...
okay, the whole team should not be blown up by any means, man that would be stupid.
who stays:
parker
duncan
thomas (yes, i include kurt)
gooden
hill
mason (obviously)
bowen (still our lockdown defender, he leaves when he's ready)
bonner
finley (keep him, just reduce his role, he breaks out every now and again)
offseason acquisitions: camby (trade for ginobili and maybe kurt), rasheed wallace, trevor ariza, andray blatche (somehow trade for him, he could be timmy's successor)
frontcourt toughness is what the spurs have always been built on and the only couple seasons they really haven't had it were this year and last
haha, my thoughts exactly my friend, i love blatche and butler too. i don't see caron happening but andray would be very realistic and great. wouldn't mind getting scola back either...
Didn't golden state just give Maggette a new contract?
I say everyone's on the table. Duncan has defined his career as a San Antonio Spur and will always be welcomed that way. I think it would be wise to make tough decisions when Manu and TP are in their primes and in contract seasons.
IM with caron. Uconn stand up.

Oy Vey! I can't believe I'm reading people say we should trade Duncan..
And I like the idea someone had about bringing Blatche over here, the kid has lots of potential, just needs good coaching..
Bowen is my favorite player on the team. However, he isn't getting playing time anymore. I think it is time for him to retire. I would like for him to become an assistant coach, move into the front office, or possibly even replace Dan Hughes as Elliott's sub announcer. It would still allow Bruce to be active in the community.
Vaughn will retire and become a coach....probably with the Spurs.
Oberto needs to retire. That heart thing is scary. I think he will most likely move back to Argentina and finish his days out as a player/coach.
Udoka is an enigma. He hustles and plays hard when out there, but his shot is not consistent and he is mistake prone. Maybe if he had more consistent minutes, he would be able to be consistently more productive on both ends of the floor. I am not sure he will be back.
Bonner was doing great the first half of the season, but since that Toronto game, he has done very little. His shot just isn't falling. His defense is atrocious and he rebounds like he is 5'4 instead of 7'. I think he will be back next year, but I will not be disappointed if he is gone.
I would like to draft F/C Jeff Pendergraph of Arizona St. and PF Ahmad Nivins of St. Joseph's. Then we bring over Gist and bring back Hairston. I would like to see Sanikidze in the summer league and see if he can do anything for us at SF.
C - Ian, Thomas, Pendergraph,
PF - Duncan, Gooden, Nivins
SF - Gist, Williams, maybe Sanikidze
SG - Mason, Manu, Hairston
PG - Parker, Hill, ?
We go from being old and somewhat unathletic....to being very young and more athletic.
Oh okay thank you Crawford i'd much rather Maggette. I didn't know Nelson wanted Corey gone to though thanks for telling me, I don't know if he's interested in the spurs though I mean last summer I got all psyched when I read he was the front runner to come here and than he just bailed and went to a team. He'd be a nice fit too. Any chance for this summer though?
The Spurs are gonna have $29 mill in expiring contracts this summer:
Manu- $10.7
Thomas- $3.8
Mason- $3.8
Bonner- $3.2
Bowen- $4
Oberto- $3.5
(Bowen's and Oberto's contracts are only half guaranteed making them more enticing for teams)
They need to use their MLE on Sheed and then use those expiring contracts for players like Carter, Jefferson, and Butler. The Bucks and Wizards are way over the cap and the Nets want that 2010 cap space.
They need to hold onto Manu. If he's still struggling with his injury by the trade deadline, then they should look into trading him. Expiring contracts are gonna be valuable this summer and at the deadline.
These are the Duncan years, they can't afford to sit still and wait for 2010. They need to make their big moves this summer. But it still comes down to Holt willing to spend some money.
PG: Parker, Hill
SG: Manu, Mason
C: Wallace, KT?
PF: Duncan, Ian
SF: trade, ?
The two worries would be backup SF and C. Ian's still an unproven player, they'll need a good backup for Tim and Sheed. Hopefully Hairston, Gist, or Williams will pan out and be that backup SF.
Very good and informitive post. I am very interested because I have been watching the Spurs since 92' and this year I am very dissapointed in there lack of flow. In past years they have been a well oiled machine, a lot of flow, crisp passes and all around perfect basketball harmony. I really believe even if they ONLY got a SF or C one or the other would make all the difference. Its not the our big 3 aren't dominate anymore, its proven they work together, the 3 championships says so. Its just there not AS dominate. One more player to take the pressure off whether it a SF or another big would make all the difference. I look foward to the spurs next year because I hope that crispness and pefect chemistry they used to have is back. Go Spurs!
To go: Oberto, Vaughn, Finley, Bowen
keep Manu? trade Manu?
i wonder if the spurs will keep gooden.....
so far his doin what his meant to do...
Parker is a keeper - best PG in tne NBA.
Duncan for leadership and limited quality minutes.
The rest is garbage or close to it.
In other words, REBUILD right now.
Good riddance, all of them. This may just save the Spurs from prolonged agony of mavs-like mediocrity.
now I get the Manu hate
Blasphemy
[quote=Rodney21a;3275659]MMM wrong...
Manu is Du 10.75 for the 09 /10 Season...
Kurt 3.8
Bowen 4
Bonner 3.24
Roger Mason 3.7
The only guys "expiring next this summer" is GOODEN..and we NEED him
plus Vaughn and Udoka...
Finley has some type of Option for next year....
Thats only 5.something Million ming off next year putting the Spurs at 59. something million which is roughly the cap for this year...so ASSUMING the NBA raises the cap limit at the same rate this summer as last...then the Cap is likely to be 62.1 Million...meaning WHAT EVER The SPurs do in the off season is gonna HAVE TO BE VIA TRADE... Of course the Luxer tax don't kick in until 75 mill and you can use your exemptions but SPURS and Mr Holt don't like that ..and now that we have a DOWN TURN in the economy that's even LESS Likely... So the wished of SHEED or WHATEVER OTHER DINOSAUR you SPURS TALK GENIUSES can muster is just the TALK..
The Whole premise of your post it just plane wrong...maybe click on the link on that Wikipedia Entry to the SOURCE to see the correct number Published http://hoopshype.com/salaries/san_antonio.htm
Hoopshype is the the site I got it from.
Manu, Thomas, Mason, Bowen, Oberto, and Bonner all have one year left on their contracts after this season. They can use those expiring contracts to make a trade this summer.
