Rebuild the entire team.
After watchingthe travesty that was our team tonight I just think of the of having this roster another season. So I figured I'd ask you knowledgable spurs fan who you think will go or stay after this season?
Rebuild the entire team.
Vaughn, Udoka, and Finley should be gone. Bowen and KT should probably retire eventhough they may be good 2nd to 3rd unit guys. The only people with any security should be Parker and Duncan.
parker
ginobili
duncan
thomas
hill
mihimmi
bring back hairston
gist
mason
bonner but not starting just for his outside shooting
bowen let him retire a spur
mabe m.williams
Vaughn, Oberto, and Udoka are expiring contracts or non-guaranteed in Fab's case..I'd expect them all to be gone..
Bowen is non-guaranteed as well..I think his status will depend on how he looks for the playoffs, but it's a toss-up..
LOL one of the stupidest posts of all-time..
if Duncan got traded, Tony Parker would instantly demand for a trade..
I agree. Get rid of everyone of these players.
Youth movement 2009!
TP/Hill/?
Mason/Manu/Hairston
?/Finley/Gist
Duncan/Gooden/Bonner
KT/Mahinmi/?
I'd rather Finley retires, but he'll be back, so I hope it's off the bench. We badly need an athletic penetrator on the wing (could Hairston develop into that role? From the little I've seen, maybe), otherwise I like the youth movement - develop Hill as a backup PG/combo guy, Gist as a stopper, Mahinmi will be the athletic big we need (I'm confident of that).
Time to move JV to the coaching staff, jettison Udoka, retire* Bowen (since Pop has obviously lost confidence in him), trade Bonner/Finley/Oberto (cap relief in 2010) for a young athlete if you can.
*he's got a 4mil contract, but I'd hate to see him traded... it would just feel wrong. he was as much a part of the last 3 championships as TD/TP/Manu, as is painfully obvious no that he's not out there.
Untouchable:
Tony Parker - definitely in his prime. Is a top 10-15 NBA player and a top 3 PG
Duncan - for obvious reasons
For the right offer (ie. youth, length and athleticism) I'd part with:
Manu - He likely has more value as a Spur than what he will bring back in return.
Mason - He was a great pick up but his defense is sub par. I'm indifferent
with regards to him
Hill - Has definite upside but will likely never reach that potential under Popovich
Keep in a reduced role:
Bowen - still a sound defender
Thomas -see Bowen
Finley - can be effective in spot minutes IMO
Players I never want to see in a Spurs uniform again:
Gooden - he will never be able to play Spurs defense
Udoka - he's just terrible and never developed into the Bowen replacement we anticipated
Oberto - old, basically a non factor at this point
Bonner - soft, I cringe seeing him start beside Duncan. Would be a decent role player as a 9th-12th man on the bench.
Vaughn - Yes he is a great guy to have on the bench and in the locker room, but as long as he is on that bench Pop will be tempted to play him.
Hmmm, I asked this question recently and the thread was locked. I hope this one stays open because it's worth speculating.
First, we need Tim.
Second, we need Manu.
Third, we need a solid shot blocking, consistent rebounder at C. (I'd much rather have that than a slasher 2 guard.)
We should get rid of most of the old vets (Ime, Vaughn, Oberto, Finley, Bowen)
I'm not sure about Bonner's situation, but if he'll be viewed as a vital contributor, then we'll lose, so he's expendable.
The key for the Spurs' long-term success is to trade Tony Parker. Talk about fool's gold. He almost always fades in the 2nd half, and tonight was no exception. A promising first half (13 points) followed by a predictable let down (4 pts in 2nd half.)
However, he's the closest thing to a "marketable star" that the Spurs have, and he has good stats, so I could see other teams giving us at least market value, if not more, in return. I wouldn't like seeing him in anything other than a Spurs uni, but if he did go to another team, at least we could defend 5 on 4 down the stretch, which would help the Spurs.
bandwagoners go, true fans stay.
I think the medical staff should be let go. I am still trying to figure out how Manu got a stress fracture when he was cleared to play after being treated from stress reaction to the same bone for almost a month.
Well, it might be my dissapointment talking...
Keep Parker and Duncan -- everybody else is expendable. That includes Popovich.
Pop is incapable of coaching or handling younger players. The only guys he has supposedly "done well" with are Duncan and Parker, but I think we all know how talented they are. they have thrived in spite of Popovich, not because of him.
There isn't another young player Pop has actually nurtured along. He alienates young guys with his dictatorial manner, and his inflexibility is getting us nowhere. His "system" is overrated. I'm sick of seeing his face, and sick of his "I'm a genius" at ude.
He is by no means a genius. Duncan is a first-ballot Hall of Fame big man. Ginobili might get there as well, and Parker is well on his way. We all know that Robinson is already there. So...Fact: There are a thousand coaches who could win rings with those players.
Popovich is nothing without great players, and right now we only have one great player who is healthy.
trading Tony Parker would be one of the worst moves in NBA history..
there's 3 ways this off-season can go..use the MLE and rely on the young guys, or use the MLE, trade Manu, and rely on the young guys..or possibly just stay cheap and keep a similar roster..it can really go either way, although Manu being traded would be strange..there's also the possibility of packing our expiring contracts next year to a team that wants the cap space..so Thomas/Bonner/Mason to give another team cap space..
candidates to sign if we only want 1 player IMO: 'Sheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess, Drew Gooden..
we can go a different path, and sign multiple lesser known players, but I wouldn't prefer that..
Parker/Hill is guaranteed at PG..
Manu/Mason is questionable at SG..both guys have a chance of being traded, it can go both ways..
Finley is the only guarantee at SF, since Pop likes seeing his ass in shorts..??? for the depth..hopefully Gist comes over, and hopefully Hairston gets a shot..otherwise, maybe somebody like Rodney Carney or Matt Barnes..otherwise, we'll have to acquire a SF through a trade, which is possible as well..
for our big men..
Duncan is obviously a lock..everything else is questionable..Ian will depend on how he looks in the summer, Kurt and Bonner could be packaged in a trade..the MLE could very well be used on Gooden, Wallace, or Dice..
it should be an interesting off-season..our young guys are good options for potential role players..and the contracts of Manu/Thomas/Mason/Bonner give us flexibility to make trades with teams looking to shed cap space..
it will also depend on ownership of course..
Ginobli, Parker, Duncan, Gooden, Mason, Hill should stay. Finely, KT, and Bowen should retire. Udoka, Vaughn, and Bonner need to go. We should pickup Artest, Sheed, and draft an athletic wing. And as much as I would like Pop to off right now, that's not a realistic request.
You need a good perimeter defender, and a SF to replace Bowen. You can afford them both. The spurs were about to take on Vince Carter's 20 million dollar contract. Both can be had for ten million a piece.
stay:
Tony Parker
Duncan
Manu
Mason
Hill
Gooden
Bowen
Keep in a reduced role:
Thomas
keep in a reduced role but would not cry if he left:
Bonner
Oberto
Players I never want to see in a Spurs uniform again:
Finley- washed up and shouldn't have been on this team this year
Udoka
Vaughn
Re: Who goes and who stays?

we need to make a splash in the offseason!!!!!
i don't understand the animosity for Gooden, he's done everything we wanted from him.
seriously manu has to go
im tired of his bs injuries and where his loyalty is in the summer international duties....spurs or country, take your pick.
yea people saying we shouldnt keep gooden, what are you thinking exactly? We finally land a big guy who can actually SCORE! hes not old as dirt, athletic and with time he will be able to play D in the system. My list you keep
TP
Hill (if pops dumbass will play him)
TD
Finley (i know people hate but he will be here if he wants to play another year-i have no problem with him playing 10-20 mpg)
Manu (Gotta see how he plays next season)
Mason (possibly trade bait for someone who can put the ball on the floor)
Bowen (if he doesnt retire can play low mpg as a stopper
Gooden
GTFOOOOOOOO!!!
vaughn (i hate this guy cuz hes so bad)
Bonner (Umm)
Udoka (Poop)
Thomas (sorry he is old and poo, dont get anyone who defends this guy)
Oberto (duh)
Keep:
Parker
Duncan (but limit his minutes)
Manu (but limit his minutes as well...back to 6th man from here on out)
Gooden
Mason
Hill
No longer needed...trade, retire or ???
Thomas
Oberto
Finley
Bowen
Vaughn
Bonner
Udoka
Give Hairston, Gist, and the other young guns a nice long look-see. Ian Mahimi stays if healthy and if not then forget about his ALWAYS injured ass. We already have a hospital emergency room squad. Try to get Pops back from Toronto (Pop screwed up letting his talent get away but, Pop has done that a lot the past 2-3 years...Pop is getting old & senile)
This years Spurs team is by far the worst team in the Duncan era. We need a makeover going for athleticism, length, height, quickness, and basketball IQ, i.e., players from schools with great basketball programs like North Carolina, UConn, Duke, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, etc.
How's this ty roster Pop's fault? He gave up the GM position to RC years ago, and even then the franchise is hampered by frugal ownership (see Scola trade or trading every 1st round pick since forever).
Ok, so I'll keep the following players in descending order of importance.
1) Duncan (face of franchise. Permanent spot until 2012)
2) Parker (all-star and only 27)
The rest are up for grabs if the right offer comes around, but we'll probably keep:
3) Ginobili (hard to trade, unpopular to trade)
4) Mason (solid production for the salary cap #; right side of 30)
5) Finley (consummate pro; can produce until proven otherwise)
6) Hill (Team won't admit blowing another first round pick on a PG...so soon)
7) Gooden (should be given chance after full training camp
Ok, the rest need to be unloaded.
There should be no less than 3 open roster spots for next season. Possibly four. If it were up to me, Vaughn, Oberto, Bowen and Udoka would be gone. With Finley and KT getting one last year.
As far as who stays, Parker, Tim, Manu, Mason, Hill, Ian, Bonner, and Gist get roster spots. Williams and Hairston compete for a spot, though I would save 2 open spots for them just the same. I'd resign Gooden to a very reasonable contract, then fill in the gaps via free agency. First, I'd make a run at either Trevor Ariza or Luc Richard Bah' Amoute, SF from the Bucks, as replacement SFs.
