NEW YORK, April 10, 2009 – Quin Snyder, the head coach of the Austin Toros, was today named the winner of the Dennis Johnson Coach of the Year award as voted by his fellow NBA Development League head coaches. Bobby Sharma, NBA D-League Vice President and General Counsel will present Snyder with the award prior to the Toros’ final home game at the Austin Convention Center tonight.

“Under Quin's guidance, Austin has remained one of the top teams all season,” said Chris Alpert, Vice President of Basketball Operations and Player Personnel for the NBA D-League. “His preparation, organization, and knowledge of the game make him a tremendous asset to Austin, and the League. He is committed to teaching players to play the game the right way, and he takes a keen interest in their skill development on the basketball court.”

The award is named in honor of the late Dennis Johnson, NBA legend and former Austin Toros head coach. In his playing career, Johnson won three NBA les with the Boston Celtics and Seattle SuperSonics, played in five NBA All-Star games and was named to the All-Defensive First Team six times. He served as interim head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers in 2002 and was in his third season coaching in the NBA D-League when he passed away.

In his second season as head coach, Snyder has led the Toros to a back-to-back 30-win seasons, coached in the 2009 NBA D-League All-Star Game in Phoenix and guided GATORADE Call-Ups Malik Hairston, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, DeMarcus Nelson and Marcus Williams

"This is a well-deserved honor for Coach Snyder," said RC Buford, president of sports franchises for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. "During his time with the Toros he has done a great job developing young players, teaching the skills needed to jump from the D-League to the NBA, while also putting a compe ive team on the court night after night. The success that Quin has enjoyed in Austin is vital to the Spurs organization. We are thrilled that he has been recognized for his hard-work and dedication."

Props. He's rebuilt his image since his ugly college exit. I thought he was a joke when he got hired and thought he only got the job because he married Larry Brown's daughter ... well, that's probably still why he got the job but he's done a very good job and has become much more humble.

I'm guessing that an NBA assistant coaching job is right around the corner. If the Spurs lose an assistant this year, he could be next in line. Or another team could come calling.

A couple weeks ago I googled "Quin Snyder cocaine" because it's rumored that he's a basehead. The first couple results were a Spurstalk thread that Brutalis (I think) started and I laughed.

Anyways, cokehead or no and neverminding his moral scruples, I think he's a decent coach. I agree, he'll have an NBA job sooner rather than later.

I didn't know much about him when he got hired but I remember you being upset and mocking his abilities pretty hardcore. It's nice that he didn't live up to those ty expectations!

Just talked to Justin Bowen at halftime. He'll be joining the team either tomorrow or for the playoffs.

    Nice, thanks for the info.

He could really help Toros especially if Spurs don't send Marcus to Austin for the playoffs and/or Ezra Williams is still injured.

Congrats coach Snyder! I think he could be a solid assistant coach in the NBA pretty soon.

Ezra suited and warmed up but didn't play.
