could Bo Jackson beat Tony Parker? didn't think so.

Ask any real Spurs fan - it doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile, only if you can beat Tony Parker & Tim Duncan in a Game 7.

DeSagana Diop would be an easy choice in this thread, but he didn't go to college.

Michael Finley, but if this questionnaire included players who attended UTSA, it would be a no-brainer.

Jim Brown is in both the college football and lacrosse halls of fame. Not sure anyone else can really beat that.

But I wonder why the poll doesn't include Brian Butch or Darrell Bevell.

Suppose Greg Paulus wins the starting job at Michigan and leads them to a Big Ten le. Does he fit into this argument - led two schools to two conference les in two sports?

The premise of the poll aside, I don't think that even that accomplishment would substantially increase an argument for Paulus, who has proven to be a pretty middling basketball player on some relatively disappointing Duke teams.

There are a number of multi-sport athletes (in college) who -- to me, at least -- would have better credentials to be in this argument than even Paulus under your scenario:

    Bo Jackson
    Jim Brown
    Jackie Robinson
    Kirk Gibson
    Deion Sanders
    John Elway
    Dave Winfield
    Charlie Ward
    Julius Peppers
    Brian Jordan
    Jeff Samardzija

Oh, I agree with you on the names and actual feats of every athlete on that list. And I further agree that Duke was mediocre by Duke standards during his career and Paulus doesn't even stand out amongst those squads. But is there any precedent for this? I've been following collegiate athletics for a long time and I'm drawing a blank.

I'd doubt there is -- to the extent that a player may have been on conference le teams in two different sports for two different schools, it would seem to happen after a transfer with a guy who started out as a two-sport athlete, chose one, hated it, and moved on to play another, but happened to be on a conference le team in the first sport. I can't think of anyone who would fit that bill, necessarily.

By the way, Donovan McNabb probably warrants mention on the earlier list.

If I recall, McNabb didn't play much for Boeheim. I could be wrong. Your mention of Dave Winfield got me thinking. Danny Ainge played major league baseball as an undergrad at BYU and then went to the NBA after graduation. And Bo Rein back in the 60's won a CWS at Ohio State and was a three year starter for Woody at tailback.

    Good call on McNabb.

I thought about Ainge, but couldn't find much on his collegiate baseball career.

If you go back far enough, you run into cats like Jim Thorpe; and if you're inclusive enough, you could consider someone like Marion Jones (pre-PEDs).
