    West playoff previews: First round

    Charley Rosen

    Link

No. 3 Spurs vs. No. 6 Mavs

    Why the Spurs should win

Tony Parker will leave Jason Kidd in the dust. And since Dallas has no steady shot-blocker, Parker will easily zip his way to the hoop.
Even with his aching wheels, Tim Duncan is still an elite low-post scorer. His clever maneuvering in the paint will tag early fouls on Erick Dampier. Imagine how much hay TD can make when operating against Brandon Bass, Josh Howard or Ryan Hollins.
Roger Mason is refreshed after taking a back seat during Manu Ginobili's brief return.
Michael Finley rises to most clutch occasions.
Matt Bonner shoots 44 percent from the outlands, which makes doubling Duncan a risky business.
Drew Gooden has fit seamlessly into San Antonio's game plan.
Ime Udoka is showing signs that he is at long last fulfilling his potential.
As ever, the Spurs' offense sets the standard for discipline and unselfishness.
The Spurs play the most stifling defense in the West. With Bruce Bowen getting plus-time with Ginobili out, their defense will be even better. Indeed, Bowen's rough, tough, relentless defense gives Dirk Nowitzki headaches.
    Dallas plays poor perimeter defense.
Above all, even without their wild-card scorer, the Spurs still know how to beat a team as flawed as the Mavs.
The Spurs SHOULD win in 6.

it's true that this series will be ended in game 6 or game 7, but the winner will definitely be the Mavs. Spurms are still a pretty good team even without Manu, and they would have a huge chance to make the second round or even WCF this season, but our boys in blue will definitely make those spurs dreams impossible.

It's really a bad news the spurs and Mavs are facing in the first round, even the second round is considered too early for these two teams to face each other. Both Mavs and Spurs deserve a side in the WCF but the reality is really cruel sometimes. Our boys in blue will have a 90% percentage to win that series, even if our Mavs lost to the spurs, the mavs still weren't a loser, or the spurs for that matter. I would root for the spurs against the Lakers in the WCF if the 10% unhappiness came true, so I hope the spur fans can also do the same thing.

The other day Rosen said that RMJ was finished for the season because he played too many minutes. Nice consistency, DRob hater

Erick Dampier can pull down Duncan's shorts and violate him anally and not get called for a foul. I have no idea why, but for some reason Dampier usually gets away with just about anything when he guards Duncan.

Not only that...but he claims Spurs play the best defense in the West? ....I'm guessing he hasn't seen the Rockets play. And he's also said plenty of times this season how bad the Spurs defense is this season and how Bowen is done.

Flip-floppers always come out during this time....

Well, maybe you're right, but the other way round it's the same with Bowen and Nowitzki. Bowen can bang Nowitzki all the time and doesn't get called for a foul as well. So, some kind of equity.

I think it will take the Spurs seven games to beat Dallas. I feel there are a lot of Spurs fans underestimating the Mavericks. They still present a few matchup problems for the Spurs.

That happened, but for sure not all the time. There were enough moments in which Bowen got away with almost everything, thus I think it's comparable to Damp and TD.

It promises to be a good series.

By virtue of being a Spurs fan, I say Spurs will take it.

If I was a Mavs fan, I'd say the Mavs will take it.

I don't think fans of either team are out of line saying their team will take this series. It promises to be a knock-down, grind-it-out battle, and I'm looking forward to every minute of it, and it could easily go either way.
