Nah, it's already in the states and closing the border during a recession is pretty reckless.
Okay...I heard a 600-something figure the other day but, wasn't really paying attention. They could have been talking about how many died from something else.
Anyway, they're sure playing this up for not taking any action -- like restricting travel and closing the border. If it's that early in the game, closing the border seems logical to me.

I asked my wife (a physician) the same thing and this is how she explained it to me. In the 1918 pandemic the strain killed people who perfectly healthy as opposed to the young & old who are the usual victims of the normal flu. Also the 1918 strain initially was not extremely lethal but after 6 months or so it became much more damaging. So basically since this is not the seasonal flu but a completely new strain and it seems to have some of those 1918 characteristics it has the potential to be really bad.
Don't you guys get it. This isn't news. Thousands of people die from the flue every year. This scare is just to take focus off the Air Force one story...
I ain't takin no vaccine. Either I take out the swine flue, or the swine flue takes me out.
Wild Cobra is an idiot.
someone get Will Smith on the phone
Please tell me you're being cheeky. If you aren't, this is one of the most inane comments I have ever heard in my life, not just from Spurstalk, but anywhere, ever. That includes: 4chan, youtube comments, digg, and fark.com. To be anywhere in that area and to be serious about it.... that's astounding. If you're attempting to be coy, bravo, but if you aren't... you're some kind of genius idiot, and I don't mean like the savant type.
The picture you posted might exonerate you but it's not showing up.![]()
I've heard this rational on some radio shows. It's just flawed logic.
Each year 96 million cases of flu in the US, 35000 deaths, that's .03% mortality.
As of saturday the cases/deaths reported from mexico showed a 6.8% mortality rate.
So if this strain spread just like the regular flu and the mortality rate remained the same you'd be looking at around 659,000 deaths.
See the difference yet?
nope. just excellent PR for this nationalized healthcare vote that's coming up. the left hand is waving at you while the right hand is pushing everything into place.
Ahhh, a Glenn Beck fan. You should at least quote him.
didn't hear him say that on this situation, but it makes sense to me.
I'll probably regret asking but ok, what has been pushed into place since monday?
chump is that you?
but seriously, just give it time. i just can't understand how this avian flu "scare" we had a couple of years ago came and went with hardly a big loss of life. now we have this swine flu that first got reported literally days before all these cases started popping up. it just doesn't make sense to me, and this swine flu is on some level 5 with the highest level being 6. 1 death compared to 36,000 deaths annually.....come on. if you can point me to the "why" then i'll check it out, but something just doesn't add up with how i'm seeing it.
Here's the why: people in US have been infected without actually going to Mexico. Only a few student from the NYC school went to Mexico for spring break but in total 49 were tested positive.
That fits WHO level 5
http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian.../en/index.htmlPhase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.
Well, I think I've already provided the information regarding the 36,000 normal flu deaths. You're just going to have to wait another week or so to know if this is going to be truely a serious pandemic. There have now been confirmed cases in 30 states and they are saying that is clear evidence of human to human infection. Think about this, they have identified patient zero (first infected) he was sick at the beginning of april. Thirty days later it's all over the world. As I mentioned before they say this has a 7 day incubation period so everytime you hear of a case reported that means that person was walking around, feeling fine, spreading the virus, for a week before they got sick and went to the doctor.
The avian flu scare is no mystery. People got it from birds and they were scared it would jump to human to human infections. It never did, but it still could. This current swine strain has apparently already done that.
If the avian flu ever does become a human to human virus you'll hear alot more panic about that than this swine flu. Mortality rates have been up to 80% with the avian flu.
Because if this strain of the virus mutates further (strengthens), we are suddenly looking at a much higher mortality rate with the ability to spread en masse to the general populace.
The WHO knows what they're doing. This wouldn't be a 5 unless it was a serious issue.
ok, but is "regular" influenza rated or classified using this scale?
Regular influenza are in "Post Pandemic" phase with seasonal activity
This swine flu in new to the human race and it is unknow if any human has already developed antibodies for it.
Once the pandemic phase is finished most of the people will have developed antibodies for this specific kind of flue (by surviving the infection or through vaccination) and will not be affected by seasonal activities.
That's my understanding of the seriousness of this swine flue but I'm no physician of any kind.
I'm not sure but I wouldn't think so since it already exists all over the world. The WHO rating is for the likely hood that a virus will spread all over the world. It's not for rating how severe the illness is.
If the virus' DNA code spelled out "A L L A H U A K B A R" would it help y'all take it more seriously?
ah, so this is pretty much a "this is a new infection we have to start dealing with" chart before it's common, right?
Man, I'm still pissed they butchered Matheson's great creation![]()
