.....trying to send a message to the FO?

I know Pop is involved in the management, but we don't know what really goes inside. Maybe Pop, RC and Holt don't see eye to eye.

Maybe he wanted to show the FO the team needs an upgrade.

Which makes sense, since we all know Pop is a great coach; I thought he may have gone senile, but he is not as old as Greg Oden yet.

There must be a valid reason Pop has been playing weird rotations.

.....trying to send a message to the FO?
No...I think he truly thought they would help his team win...despite plenty of evidence to the contrary.

Pop was very angry with himself when he traded Luis Scola to a division rival. He disagreed with the decision the day he made it, and told himself as much.

doesn't matter what the les are, pop could have RC replaced in a heartbeat if he so chose.

he's still the one who makes all the major roster decisions. the les are there so that RC can handle the more day-to-day operations that go with being a GM.

    Ok.

But there is the $$$$ factor.

    That goes throught Holt, right?

Is Holt such a cheap bas to the point it prevents Spurs to make some big moves?

He is one of the few owners in the league that has gone over the luxury tax threshold to secure needed talent.
    Is that true ?

No problem, the whole "the Spurs are cheap" thing doesn't pass a simple fact check. The Spurs operate on a budget and, since the implementation of the luxury tax, it appears that the lux tax limit is that budget.

The tax went into effect in 05-06. The Spurs increased their payroll by about 14M that year and have increased their budget at almost exactly the same rate at the increase in the lux tax ever since.

So maybe you were onto something in your OP. Maybe it was Pop the coach saying to Pop the FO to tell the ownership group that it won't get any better than this until I can spend enough to compete with LA, Boston, Cleveland, etc.

Peter Holt , i think he means ...

and anyways ... i highly doubt Pop had the intention the OP mentioned ... Pop was just a dumbass for not playing Hill (even prior to the playoffs) ... and as for Bonner playing a lot, i just think he saw in Gooden the qualities that anybody who paid attention would've seen (he's lazy , not focused etc.) and has no plans for him in the future with this team ... and i think he just wanted to up Bonner's trade value for this summer ... unfortunately , i don't think he accomplished that ...

i think the smartest decision Pop could have possibly made with Bonner would've been to sit him the rest of the season after the game against Boston where he had like 30 points and attributed it to some fabricated injury ... at that point his trade value was the highest it's been and the FO probably could have made lemonade with lemons this off-season ...

If you ever pop open a Spurs media book, you'll see listed les under Gregg Popovich.
Coach and Executive Vice-President Of Basketball Operations.

That means Pop is in control of all things Spurs with regards to the actual game playing of basketball which would include the selection of players both free agents and drafts, and the amount of contracts with input from HoltCat and RC and some other lesser known Spurs Basketball people.

I think that's about it. Pop has the final word on everything except the size of the budget.

Thank you Pop. If you hadn't told me I'd never have had a clue. Thanks...now go get Scola back to SA where he belongs.

Pop is the front office you dork.
So how did he override himself on the Josh Howard draft pick? He wanted Howard as well as TD but they but got overruled gy RC. I think I read somewhere in ST that the Spurs have a rule about draft picks - there must be 100% greement or they don't draft that person.

    RC made that deal...
And Pop admitted it was a mistake soon after IIRC. The Howard and Scola deals were both RC's doings. I think he has been living off the Manu and TP selections for too long.
