Moments after the Red Raiders' 12-0 victory against A&M in 2001, Tech fans tore down the goal post at the south end of the stadium before making their way to the field's north end, where they tried to force the goal post through a section filled primarily with A&M fans. In fighting that ensued, McKinney (a distinguished A&M Alumnus and assistant to Governor Rick Perry) suffered a cut above his eye that required eight s ches.
McKinney held a press conference immediately after the incident. "I was trying to keep them from coming up in the stands," McKinney said. "I pushed two of them down, and grabbed my binoculars and said, `The next one that comes up gets it.' Then, somebody who was already in the stands, I guess, came up and knocked the fool out of me. I saw him hit me -- a kid in a red shirt. "It was like the Alamo," McKinney said. "They were coming up over the wall."
Official stadium security film later showed that a Texas A&M student had actually punched McKinney.
