Agreed. Not one bit. And I'm serious, not being sarcastic.

But at the same time, for him to be such a piss-poor leader, to have taken a team as far as he has is pretty damn good.
I agree, but part of the blame should be placed on Mark Cuban & Donnie Nelson. They've created this illusion that Dirk is a great leader which he isn't. They need a Tim Duncan or a Shaq kind of player. They don't have any low post presence and paying Erica $10 is just ridiculous (Nice going AJ).

The Mavs were really dumb to not trade Dirk for Kobe (I still don't know if it true).

That trade was never on the table. Kobe was going to come to Dallas to play with Dirk Nowitzki, not Josh Howard and Jason Terry.

Agreed...but if you're a professional athlete, and in a playoff series when you're down a game, you don't talk negative about your team...period..
He may have done that in the past, but i don't see any of that in that article. He's stating the obvious and tbh he is playing the 4, so he has himself along with Erica to blame.

True...but Ericka's always been soft...so has Dirk..and they keep losing. But to let your teammates know that you don't think they can play physical...I don't think that's very smart.

Can they really, i mean you have a bonafide pot head and a Kenny Smith wannabe (aka JET the cheerleader) on your team. That surely isn't going to take you far.

You need to have that toughness to win a championship, and the Mavs lack that big time.

Michael had it, Magic had it, Shaq had it and Duncan most certainly has it. Kobe has it too, but he has some really soft teammates around him. Vujacic acting all tough against Houston was a smoke screen. He'll get owned by a black guy the next time around.

It all starts with their leader and Dirk is a perfect no 2 like Scottie was back in the days.
Dirk can be a co-leader if he wants. He has some weird talents and durability that makes him a good enough to be a franchise player. But he definitely is lacking what MJ, Magic, Shaq have had. Kareem was certainly another team leader even when Magic got there, and he didn't have the vocal, or typical social skills to fire people up like a Magic or Michael.

Duncan has had "it" now for quite some time (see 4th quarter of the elimination game this year) but I think there was a moment when he had to grow into that role--after he was without Drob in 2005 he was unsure of himself for moments in the playoffs.
Kobe is suspect so I wouldn't include him with MJ, Magic, Duncan and Shaq, yet. He's a warrior, but i don't know if he's a proven leader. (See: 2006-2007 playoff eliminations when he just gave up and stopped shooting to make a statement. Summer of 2007, when he had a nervous breakdown...)
Plus if they get eliminated by the Rockets, or fall short in the Finals again due to team softness, he'll probably throw his team under the bus for the millionth time in the off season.

I don't think Dirk has to be Scottie. If he ever wins a ring, he'll probably shut up and stop second-guessing his team when facing playoff adversity/uncertainties.

TNT just called out Dirk for saying the Nuggets can guard him too. I do think part of these quotes are psychological. Maybe he's trying to call out his own teammates to be tougher. And, maybe he is telling the Nuggets they're so good that they don't need to push him around to be effective. But, man, I do agree that those are suspect things to say for a number of reasons.

Fact remains that if you have to resort to mind games, you are not going to do well. Dirk is a baller, just play like it and quit whispering sweet nothings on the air waves.

No..it's not...but you can't let another team think you're softer than them...that's just setting yourself up for a physical ass whooping. You have to say "If you want to fight, let's fight." You've got to get in there and be tough..even if you're softer..otherwise it's like big brother giving little brother a noogie.

That's giving Dirk too much of the benefit of the doubt. That's just a stupid thing to say for team confidence, especially in public. If he was a real leader he'd tell them directly, behind closed doors, not to the press.
Plus, I don't see how calculating it is to deter the Nuggets from playing tough...that would just make them PROUD and give them the green light to bully them some more.

    What did he say?
Basically how he is shocked and upset that Dirk would come out and say what he did. He said Dirk is a great player and no one should be able to check him, but to come out and say something like that is just the wrong message to send.

    But he was very animated.

Their premise was that Dirk is actually very tough to guard and that he doesn't want to be pushed anymore, so he concedes that teams play him tough. They thought that he should not admit that and instead go out there and play tougher.
