Dirk has gone from slightly overrated to massively underrated. KG somehow got a pass for not being able to do anything by himself. Dirk doesn't have that much more talent around him yet he's somehow held to a much higher standard.

KG brings the effort on the defensive end. That is where everyone makes the differentiation. Fair or not, that is what people are looking at. Dirk is clearly more talented, but in terms of winning, defense will always get more credit.

KG wasn't much of a defender on Minnesota. He played defense for one year and a half until his knee popped. Pre-Boston he wasn't much better on defense than Dirk.

Offense gets credit. You didn't see Raja Bell winning back-to-back MVPs. Bruce Bowen is unknown to average NBA fans. LeBron James was a superstar before he started playing defense. Kobe plays hard defensively about 5% of the time and he's still MJ Jr.

Dirk is the best player on the court. Even with Howard, however, I gave the Nugs a slight overall edge in talent. My pick was Denver in 7. Without Howard, Dallas becomes infinitely easier to guard on defense and attack on offense.

Dirk has never had anything close to the talent around him that KG had in 2008. KG in 2004 probably had a better supporting cast than Dirk has during his prime.
Dirk almost won a championship in 2006 with what would have been one of the worst supporting casts of all time.
