KG wasn't much of a defender on Minnesota. He played defense for one year and a half until his knee popped. Pre-Boston he wasn't much better on defense than Dirk.

Offense gets credit. You didn't see Raja Bell winning back-to-back MVPs. Bruce Bowen is unknown to average NBA fans. LeBron James was a superstar before he started playing defense. Kobe plays hard defensively about 5% of the time and he's still MJ Jr.

Dirk isn't a great defender but he's somewhere close to average. Dirk >>>>>>>>>>> Nash defensively.

All of the talking heads always stress defense. I am not talking about the average Joe. Offense does get credit, obviously, but when it comes to people analyzing the game, they always say defense is what wins you a championship.

I never said Dirk was a terrible defender, but clearly KG has won DPOY.

Dirk has never had anything close to the talent around him that KG had in 2008. KG in 2004 probably had a better supporting cast than Dirk has during his prime.

KG almost won a championship in 2006 with what would have been one of the worst supporting casts of all time.

Overall Dirk has had comparable talent over the course of his career. In 2006-2008, the Mavs had undeniable "talent" despite the "shortcomings" of their team.

As much talent as Dirk had around him, he never had one clear all-star playing with him during his prime year. Howard was the best, and he barely made it in 07. Fact is Dirk had to be monster on offense almost every night for the Mavs to win.
