One wonders if Scola would be grabbing 8.8 (not 10) boards if RC weren't chiding him back in the day. He was a pretty poor rebounder when he was drafted.
There's a fairly extensive interview with Monteccia in spanish where he announces his retirement from basketball. (link here)
I've extracted and translated the couple questions that touches on the Spurs.
Talking about mental toughness and hard work...
Q: Is that what set apart the golden generation, the legacy that is leaving behind?
Monteccia: Right. The ambition and the mental toughness. I remember how much Scola was suffering when he received the emails from (RC) Buford criticizing him for not grabbing enough rebounds. And Luis would stay after every practice session jumping and jumping... Today I see him grabbing 10 boards on the NBA and it's clear that San Antonio ended up making a mistake. That's how all the players were in that national team.
....
Q: Could you have gotten any farther if you didn't have as many injuries?
Monteccia: I don't think the injuries really held me back as far as reaching higher, I got where I wanted... Only the achilles injury kept me out for very long.
Q: What was left in your career that you didn't do?
Monteccia: The only thing was playing in the NBA. It was never a goal, but I was very close... I was surprised by that phone call from Pop in 2004. I couldn't believe it. Valencia asked me to stay and I stayed...
Q: Do you regret that?
Monteccia: Of course I regret it because of everything I gave Valencia and how bad they ended screwing me up. Even though I had one more year left in my contract, I could have pressured them to let me go. On top of that, the year after I went to visit Manu, Pop saw me and said: 'What did you do that time? You should be here with us.'. I wanted to kill myself (laughs)

Man, I've always been a big fan of Montecchia. Scrappy, tough as nails and damn clutch shooter. I was calling for the Spurs to sign him for a couple of years. Interesting to learn that it was that close to happening.
If Argentina had Montecchia this past summer and Manu could have stayed healthy, they would have had a real shot of beating the U.S.
Montecchia >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Prigioni
P.S.
Scola has owned RC horribly. While in Europe, Scola said he was a good rebounder and he came to the NBA and proved he is a good rebounder. Horrible scouting job by RC compounded by sending multiple emails that critiqued Scola unfairly and ended up not only being wrong but ended up souring Scola and his agents on the franchise.![]()
14 rebounds for Scola.
11 pts to go with it and team high +19 when on the court
Seeing Scola owning the Lakers at the boards at both ends of the floor makes me want to shoot myself.![]()
And Splitter was there while the whole Scola-RC situation happened... just saying...

Are you serious?? Please... USA! USA! USA!![]()
well, 2 offensive rebounds isn't exactly owning anyone on this end of the floor.
but yes, he had an overall good rebounding night.
I saw the game, I didn't know he only had 2 off. rebounds it looked like a lot more. But even though he didn't get too many offensive rebounds he provoked 2nd chance oportunities making the Lakers players to lose it out of bounds or drawing fouls, bealive me the stat sheet may not reflect it but he was a pain in the ass for the Lakers going for the offensive boards.
P/S: If you go by stats you may think that Gasol had a good game but he was one of the biggest reasons the Lakers got smashed.
yep. i couldn't agree more. i watched the game and Scola was great. there's a reason why Houston was compe ive yesterday without tmac and yao, and he's a big part of it.
Amazing how this team can still fight whatever happens to them. they have great "under the radar" players. i like that.
I told my dad about the Scola situation while we were watching that game yesterday and he just shook his head. LOL
Scola is a beast. he abuses the out of Odom, it's funny to watch
So wait, you're saying Scola might have been part of the reason he doesn't play for the Spurs? That's hilarious considering you've spent the last 2 years chalking it up to abject stupidity...
Now that you've admitted this, you just need to make the final step and admit Scola never wanted to play for the Spurs...not from the night he was drafted by them in the second round when he uttered the easily understandable phrase, "it'd have been better if I hadn't been drafted at all".
Maybe you'll finally concede this is another 4 years...
In closing... Scola. Better Houston than Cleveland. And the Rockets aren't going to get past the Lakers, and the only reason they made it out of the first round is because TMac got hurt.
the Spurs dropped the ball on Scola. Only a moron wouldn't agree
Scola is an asshole...only someone that hadn't followed the relationship from the night he was drafted(or timvp) would disagree. It's not really a mystery to anyone that was here then and paying attention...
PS: He's not that good.
This a marked improvement from 'He sucks'. I guess we'll have to wait another year until we read 'He's decent'.
FIFY
Sending questionable emails to a Player whose rights you own doesn;t sound helpful... that was another ingredient in souring the relationship...
Now something more scary is that Splitter has declared that Scola is the best teammate he's ever had... that means... his opinion on RC and the Spurs will be biased... we should trade his rights for something valuable now b4 we get a Scola part 2...
He already is Scola part 2.
Beyond that...Scola's an asshole. He was in the draft and draft eligible in the 2002 draft and the Spurs drafted him and he got pissed off about and started talking , that night...that was when the bad blood started, and it was Scola that started it...
"it'd have been better if I hadn't been drafted at all"
That was the first shot fired.
I don't give a what reasons he had for making that comment...it was an ignorant comment to make publicly upon being drafted. It's the sort of thing you about outside of the public eye...not in it.
Communication indeed...
PS: Scola's not worth all this discussion. Brad Miller is more deserving of it.
He's going to choke in this series, just like Bonner, watch.
Until he is traded to a conference rival and becomes a legit Spurs killer with credentials he is not Scola 2...
He's not going to be traded to a conference rival unless he is signable, and since he isn't right now, it's a moot point.
What you guys need to realize...especially now that timvp has admitted as much...
Scola is very likely the reason he is not a Spur, and the reason he was traded was more than likely because he was refusing to sign with them and the Spurs were going to get nothing for him.
Which gives the Spurs a choice, let him walk for nothing, or get something for him by trading him to a team where he will do the least amound of damage...
They could have gotten more for him by trading him to Cleveland...and Cleveland would be even more of a than they appear to be now...I would have called that a bad trade for a team with le aspirations. So trade him to a ty team that has too many negatives to win a le..
And that's exactly what they did. Barring a trade, he is never going to win an NBA le, he is never going to do anything but put up empty stats on a ty team...that is the career Luis Scola bought for himself by being a stick...
And a lack of Scola is not why the Spurs can't win a le...you are focusing on the wrong Argie if you think that...
So you're saying that the Spurs deliberately choosing him in the 2nd round instead of the first as they told him they would (since his contract back then had a clause that if he was selected as a first round pick he could have left without paying anything) wasn't ALSO the trigger to the start of a bad relationship? come on whottt this is not ALL because of him and the Spurs FO is not perfect...
