Nolan Ryan.
I am timvp's uncle and have had Tommy John surgery three times. I am timvp great uncle who threw a sidearm knuckleball and called Stan Musial one of my best friends.
Who are we?
This forum needs a good trivia thread...
I'll start things off with some who am I trivia.
In a single season I lead the league in ERA, Strikeouts, k/9, h/9, K's to bb and adjusted ERA...not only did I not win the Cy Young when I did it, I didn't even finish in the top 5 in the voting.
Who am I?
Nolan Ryan.

Who are we?
Jose Rijo...you told me this once
You mentioned this before too but I could never figure out who you were talking about...IIRC you said he was influential in inventing the knuckleball but someone who did that would be way too old to be your great uncle...I am timvp great uncle who threw a sidearm knuckleball and called Stan Musial one of my best friends.
Who are we?
Hoyt Willhelm?
Ok while waiting for the confirmation...here's some more trivia...
I am a pitcher who is a multiple 20 game winner who at various times in my career lead the league in ERA, complete games and shutouts and am among the greatest pitchers in baseball history in career ERA and winning PCT. I am arguably the greatest pitcher in World Series history due to my undefeated record and several other WS pitching records I have held.
I also once lead my league in Fielding PCT, and not as a pitcher.
Who am I?
Thunder dan struck out 3 times in a high school game verses me with several foul tips. I used to drink with Thunder dan in college and once during a late night during my rookie campaign I offered my per diem for someone to bring weed to my hotel. I'm a starting pitcher probable this evening. Who am I?
Andy Sonnanstine?
correct answer. When he made that call though it was when the Rays were ty during his rookie year and I don't think he ever expected to last in the big leagues as long as he has. I think he was making his 2nd start against the Indians at that time. He was my good friend's roommate in college, then he moved in with Manny Burriss who plays for the Giants
Whitey Ford
Si.
Incorrect.
He invented one of the knuckleball grips, which allowed him to throw it sidearm.
Three-time All-Star -- twice as a starter, once as a reliever. Broke in with the Cardinals but biggest game was with the White Sox when he clinched the AL pennant. He came into a 4-2 game with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and induced a double play on the first pitch.![]()
George H. Ruth.
Ahh ok. Gerry Staley?
BTW:
You are correct on both of these. Very good.
Nolan Ryan - In 1987 at the age of 40 Nolan Ryan turned in one of the greatest seasons by a baseball pitcher in history, leading the NL in:
Strikeouts - 270
ERA - 276
K/9 - 11.68
H/9 - 6.55
K/BB - 3-1
Among other categories yet failed to finish in the top 5 in Cy Young voting due to an 8-16 record caused by a bad bullpen and virtually no run support.
Babe Ruth - Ruth ranks 12th all time in winning PCT for pitchers( 671%) and 15th all time in ERA(2.28). In various years he lead the AL in Complete Games in 1917(35), ERA in 1916(1.75) and won over 20 games in 1916(23) and 1917(24). He also sports an undefeated record in the World Series(3-0) and for many years held the record for consecutive scoreless innings in World Series play(29)(and still holds the record for consecutive scoreless innings by a lefty). In 1919 he lead all AL outfielders in Fielding PCT(996%).

I was strictly an off-field doubles hitter until I changed cities and my new team changed ballparks and until I made a conscious choice to pull the ball as much as possible, morphing into a prolific home run hitter. Oh, and as a matter of pure coincidence, around the same time, I became acquainted with the author of a scandalous book that discussed illicit aspects of baseball culture and alleged my participation in such conduct. I literally pointed my finger to protest my innocence. I am among baseball's all-time leaders in home runs, hits, and failed drug tests. Who am I?

Rafael Palmeiro
Hey...as far as I know he only failed one test and said it might be because he used Tejada's syringe, and since Tejada has now been busted for roid use...
Chico Escuela?

Correct. R.I.P.
His coolest story was about how he returned to work with Cardinals pitchers after his retirement and he worked with Bob Gibson in the offseason of 1962. He was assigned to help Gibson add some movement to his pitches. I would say he succeeded . . . .
I was the youngest and holiest of the three brothers who played in the outfield for the same team at the same time.
Who am I?

You have to ask a trivia question if you answer one.
There are 27 members of the 3,000 hit club, but only one reached 3,000 hits with a triple, only one reached 3,000 hits with a home run, and only one was thrown out on the same play that saw him reach 3,000 hits. Who are they?
In 1982, I teamed with Rickey Henderson to steal 158 bases - setting a new record for teammates.
I stole 47 bases at age 40 and 35 at 41.
I was part of the Dodgers infield that stayed together for a record-breaking 8 years.
Players hang around as long as they possibly can if the 500 home run plateau is within their reach. Which player was the oldest when he hit his 500th home run?
Davey Lopes.
Correct (for the record ... timvp didn't know the answer)
