Duncan, Parker named All-NBA
By Jeff McDonald
First, the headline that barely qualifies as news: Tim Duncan has been named to his 12th All-NBA team in as many seasons.
Now, the headline that does qualify as news: Tony Parker has been named to his first All-NBA team.
The league released its list of honorees this afternoon. Duncan wound up on the second team, trailing league MVP LeBron James and Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki at the forward slots. It is Duncan's third second-team selection in four seasons. He was a first-teamer eight times.
Duncan actually received more first-team votes than Nowitzki (39 to 35) but the Mavericks forward garnered more total points.
Parker, meanwhile, showed up on the third team, after producing the finest season of his NBA career. Parker averaged 22 points and 6.9 assists per game, both personal bests.
Dirk over Duncan?
that .
That's 12 straight years that Tim Duncan has been either 1st Team or 2nd Team All-NBA. There are only 3 players in history who've made more All-NBA teams: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (15), Karl Malone (14), and Shaquille O'Neal (13). There are another 5 players who've made 12 All-NBA teams (Dolph Schayes, Jerry West, Bob Cousy, Julius Erving, and Hakeem Olajuwon). But Shaq and Hakeem each made All-NBA several times on the 3rd Team.
There are only 6 players in history who've been 1st or 2nd team All-NBA at least 12 times:
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (10x 1st team, 5x 2nd team)
Karl Malone (11x 1st team, 2x 2nd team -- also 1x 3rd team)
Jerry West (10x 1st team, 2x 2nd team)
Bob Cousy (10x 1st team, 2x 2nd team)
Tim Duncan (9x 1st team, 3x 2nd team)
Dolph Schayes (6x 1st team, 6x 2nd team)
Julius Erving was on the 1st or 2nd team All-ABA on 5 different occasions and the 1st or 2nd team All-NBA on 7 different occasions, too.
Duncan's feat is pretty damned remarkable.
Oh, and big props to Tony Parker for making his first All-NBA team. That's a tremendous accomplishment for any player and a great testament to just how hard Tony Parker has worked to become a truly elite player in the NBA. Here's to several more in the coming years.
I thought Dirk was in a slump in regular season.
I guess Tim's last two months took him out of the running for getting another 1st team selection.
Oh well, everything is gravy by this point. He's already had so many consecutive 1st teams.
Good job on Tony making 3rd. Spurs have big three have been upping their games. Manu 3rd last year. Tony 3rd this year.
I think Tony will stay on contending for All-NBA guard spots from here on out.
It really is.
Thanks for the info. If you don't mind I'd like to quote you in the Duncan Mini Forum.
Yeah, Timmy just missed out on being 1st team again.
And Parker got a First Team vote -- interesting.
Roy and CP3 over Parker? I'd argue Parker had an amazing season...more deserving of All NBA 2nd team. And Dirk making first team?![]()
Either way, major props to both our Spurs players!![]()
Duncan was playing MVP basketball before his injury, so he would have been a lock..
I'm still trying to figure out how that happened.
i don't get why he's second behind Dirk..... Oh well.
I was thinking the same thing when I saw it. Roy in front of Tony? CP3 in front of Tony? He really kept the Spurs compe ive with the injuries to Duncan and Ginobili. Dirk in front of Tim? That's just crazy.
I am not going to dwell on who should have been where. I am just going to say congrats to TD and TP for a huge accomplishment. All NBA Team >>>>>>>>>>>All Star
Congrats to the TnT crew.![]()
Jumpin Dwight and shooting Dirk instead of TD?
Damn WTF
well, pretty accurate all NBA teams IMO.
congrats to our two players.
Having three players who have been in all nba teams recently should be a sign of hope for the spurs. i don't think there is another team who has three all nba teams players in the last 2 years.
EDIT: the suns have actually three players who have been in the all nba teams in the last 2 years with shaq, nash and stoudemire. are there others ?
Well they are both great players for sure.
But Dirk avg 25 points and 8 rebounds during the regular season and played every game.
And now he is averaging 33 pionts and 12 rebounds this playoff series. I think that probably gave him the slight edge.
I'm absolutely certain that Dirk's play in the playoffs has nothing to do with whether he made 1st or 2nd team.
Those votes were all cast before the playoffs started.
Congrats to TD and TP!!
Dirk above TD is logical.
For Parker, it was a tossup between him, Billups and Roy. He could have made the 2nd team instead of Roy but there is nothing wrong with Roy being above him.
Anyway, congrats to both.
truth this year

Manu said this last year![]()
Looks right to me. TP and Chauncey had great seasons, but so did Roy. When you consider that TD is on the Spurs and Carmelo is on Denver, I think it gives more clout to the guy who is the only All- NBA player on his team and what that team accomplished.
