Magic Jack - New Phone Service

Anyone able to use this with an alarm company I have ADT and it needs a phone line.

Yikes. I would not put anything vital to life and limb on something as unreliable as internet connectivity.

We have not used MagicJack yet and found this site through Google and read through it to give us an idea of how this product worked for other people. Hope this information helps some people get their refunds or to be able to talk to a human about their faulty product.

o...i just googled magic jack after i ordered it and found this thread.
i now want to cancel my order because i did not realize that my local friends may have to call me long distance now.

when i got the confirmation email it said email back to make any changes. so i emailed back and said to cancel my order and do not charge my credit card.
do you think will happen now>?

...I have a cordless telephone that you plug the base unit into a wall jack and a receptacle. The extension phone that comes with it simply plugs into a receptacle(no wall jack required). Will this product allow the extension phone to work if I have the base unit connected to my USB port?

...Can you leave it plugged in all the time and use it for your primary home phone?

....Can you use the internet and phone at the same time?

I went to Radio Shack(who by the way carries this product) and the man didn't know the answers to these questions. Can someone help me?

o, I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me about the technical use/operating components of YMAX company's "famous" Magicjack VoIP device? Briefly, I am in need of a simple Info Tech explanation that can identify the non-serious nature of the device on any computer with internet capabilities.

Today I was interrogated by a representative of the Department of Industrial Relations (located in a southern state)... for putting my Magicjack into one of the state computers with a simple goal of trying to make a phone call while using one of the public computers. Same thing happened at a local library... treated me as though I was hacking into their computer systems! No one had heard of or new how to simply explain the capacity of the Magicjack system while plugged into a USB port, including me.

At both locations it was regarded as a potentially "illegal scam" and that although they were uncertain of a charge or infraction citation, it nonetheless left a bad taste in my mouth along with an irritated disposition. If I could have any Info Tech insight on how to explain this simple operating device, it may save... my life!

Sure, it should work fine. Although remember your computer must stay on and connected to internet in order for it to work. It seems you have it figured out already: by plugging your phone jack into the MJ phone port. The electric phone base must stay plugged into electrical outlet as well. You should be good-to-go! BYW, it has been working fine for the past few months for us. In fact so well, perhaps it is why I have the problem posted!

Anything that sounds to good to be true isn't as good as it sounds.
I just tried ordering the stupid thing. I was so excited BUT, when it did not arrive (and I paid expedited handling), several emaisl back and forth to try and find out where it was, I finally did the live chat. Ok, obviously I was chatting with someone who's ability to understand the English language was lacking.
My question was simple: Where is it?
The USPS Track and Confirm stated that electronic notification was received by them, but NOTHING ELSE! No indication of when picke dup from Magic Jack in Florida, No transit information, no delivery, blah blah
So where was it?

I was told that it was delivered that "day after I ordered it". Ok.....well it obviously wasnot delivered correctly.

I was then told I put the wrong suite # for delivery. Ahhhhh well then WHY DID THE CONFIRMATION EMAIL FROM THE COMPANY HAVE THE RIGHT SUITE NUMBER?

I then stated that I wanted it sent rush, but since I had already apid for rush and it was not rushed, that they should rush it and refund the money since they did not live up to their end of the RUSH DELIVERY.

I was basically told to either have it rushed, no refund, and that it was my fault because I did not put the name of my company on the label.

WELL, I GET PACKAGES DALY FROM THE USPS, know our carrier, he knows me, the guard downstairs knows me (even though in San Francisco, our building is really smally).

So.......now I am at a delima -- to get or not to get, that is the question.
I think the customer service sucked big time.
The woman was rude and if you can tell rude from a live chat, then obviously they are rude.

tomorrow I am going to try and call the ocmapny in Florida and see if they are real or not.

Maybe this is the biggest scam in consumer history with lots playing into it
For sure, customer service is not one of their fortes.

Why are these darn internet companies so afraid to give a phone number on their site.

I have just ordered the magic jack 20 mins ago after reading this forum
I would have rather bought it from Wal-Mart (anything can be returned for your money back if you are not happy LOL) however they do not sell them here in Canada
And from what I understand all I can get is a US number but that is not a problem if I am getting free us and Canada calling .I just want a extra phone in the house as my kids (16 and 9) never get off the phone so they can call out using this one
But the web site for Canada http://www.themagicjack.ca/ takes PayPal so
I know if I have any problems all I need to do is tell them to give me my money back
Also I will be using my visa to pay PayPal and that is the one I pay insurance on
So again another way to get my money back (the visa insurance works good to if I am not happy all I do is tell them what’s wrong they put the money back the same day ad they do all the work) it’s always worth having one card that has insurance on it .if you are not sure of the place you are buying from use that one.LOL but for the most part I think insurance is a big rip-off on cards(cost you 25cents to insure the gas in your car LOL
Anyway I will test it out for a week or 2 and repost my findings
Here is to hopeing I can get a phone for my kids for $20 bucks a year

Based upon my initial toying with it, Magic Jack appears to work as advertised, the call quality is decent in comparison to Vonnage and better I think than Skype.

$39 for a years sounds great to me.

Do not waste your time. It DOES NOT WORK.

Got it and within 30 minutes it failed to make phone calls to dormant phones that had been silent for over 5 minutes. It registered those phones as busy.

On all our cell phones it rang directly into the answering messages...

I have read more of the positive 222 replies relating to the magicJack & I cannot dispute them. For the major "con" against having your computer on all of the time just to receive calls; I discovered a "cost-effective" solution whereby I can terminate my $38/month landline for the $59 (4 or 5 year) plan. I mention this because I have three MJ's setup successfully for a 24/7 operation, using book size Thin Client computers on a UPS power backups.

The Thin Client computer I am using (& I tested many brands & models before zeroing in on just one make/model) is a HP Thin Client model T-5710 that uses a power adapter drawing around 14 watts (same as 2 or 3 night lights) when it sits idle. The T5710 has no moving parts, no spinning hard drive (uses a solid state module for its hard drive), no fans, etc. So quiet, you can sleep next to it and not know it's ON unless you look for the little green indicator ON light. It runs Windows XPe (e=embedded) and it's almost bullet-proof in thunder storms. I say "almost" because I'm sure someone will come along with a rifle just to to say that theirs isn't.

Here's what I did: First, I made sure my internet provider was NOT providing service via a phone line, but through either a Cable Company OR Satellite Service. After saying goodbye to the phone company, I physically disconnected my house wires to the telephone pole at the "TELCO" box. This now isolates the inside telephone wiring from the actual telephone pole. My magicJack plugs from the USB "dongle" (RJ-11) directly into the wall jack so that ALL of my phones "inside" my house will work from the magicJack (including any base units for the cordless phones).

Next, I bought the best Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) that runs directly through the battery (instead of switching to & from the battery) so that the power doesn't "brown-out" during any power outages. My cable/satellite modem is connected to the UPS unit.

After that, the HP Thin Client T5710 is pre-configuered for using the magicJack whereby, the monitor & keyboard & mouse are removed because they are not used after the initial setup. The Thin Client power adapter is also plugged into the UPS unit.

During power outages that can last for hours, my phone service continues to remain available because satellite AND cable services are usually not affected by such power problems. Satellite dishes do need a clear view of the southern sky for best reception, so during a T-Storm, if you have a TV picture, you should have an internet connection, too. And, remember... if you are only using a cordless phone, power it through the UPS unit so that it (the base unit) will work during the power outage, too.

If you Google the HP T-5710, you will find more information today than I did when I started all this last year. (That's right! I saved a few hundred dollars already.) My phone service is now powered by magicJack 24/7 and I do not have a monthly phone bill any more. My total costs for all this? Almost $300! After 10 months, all this paid for itself and the rest now goes towards keeping the "Bar" fully stocked. Wouldn't you like to boost your Bar Budget for game times? I'm Thick-Headed (with a Wife who doesn't like anything I do) and if I can do this, so can you!!!

Yes! ...and there is also unlimited 411 calls, too! Plus there are no taxes being charged for the 911 services. Check your phone bill and add up all those tiny tax charges. I cannot find any of those same tax charges on my magicJack phone bill either. NO, Wait! There is NO magicJack phone bill. Just a license bill for either $19.95 for one year or $59 for 5 years. Should I buy in bulk?
