Broad Ripple High School senior Kenya Simmons didn't know what to expect when she was called to the principal's office.
Principal Linda Davis simply asked the 18-year-old if she planned to go to the prom. Simmons said no.
The teen said, "My dream was to go with George Hill," the 2004 Broad Ripple graduate who just completed his rookie season with the San Antonio Spurs.
In a fan letter, Simmons had asked Hill if he would take her to the prom.
Then the principal let her in on a big surprise.
The letter touched the pro basketball player, who earlier had gone to the school office -- and bought tickets to tonight's big event.
"My fantasy had come true," Simmons said. "I started crying because I was happy."
The Indianapolis Public Schools student wrote to Hill in February but hadn't gotten a reply.
Since the Dallas Mavericks eliminated the Spurs in the first round of the NBA playoffs April 28, Hill knew he could be back home for the prom.
Hill accepted the offer because Simmons' letter showed she was a big fan.
"I was going to be in Indianapolis with no plans (tonight), so it was a great opportunity to go to my old school," said Hill, who attended the prom twice when he was a student.
Hill knew taking Simmons to the event tonight at the Scottish Rite Cathedral would make her the talk of the school.
"That's what I wanted," Hill said. "I saw it as a way to connect to the school. I love this city. It's a blessing that I have made it this far, and I want to give back."
Hill, who isn't married, didn't want to comment on his current dating status.
His plans for the evening with Simmons, who will attend Ivy Tech Community College to study nursing, are simple.
"I just want us to go and have fun," said Hil. His assistant will accompany the couple.
Simmons has followed Hill's career from Broad Ripple to Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis and the Spurs. She has seen him play with IUPUI and the Spurs but never met him.
Simmons rushed over the past two weeks to get ready for the prom. Her mother, Juanita Simmons, and a cousin scrambled to get a dress.
"We rushed to get everything together, but now we got it and she's going to look pretty," her proud mother said.
Juanita Simmons, a single parent of five, intends to have the camcorder running from the time Hill arrives at the house. She said it's a great way for her daughter to close out high school.
"She's going to the prom with an NBA player and finishing with a 3.0 GPA," she said.
The students will be thrilled to have one of the school's most famous athletes on the dance floor, the principal said.
"It will be a great prom, I'm sure," Davis said. "Everybody will be very excited."

I know its sad...but this is the first thing I thought of too.
It's a nice story, but I would never let my teenaged daughter go to her high school prom with a 23 year old man.

In all seriousness...it's a nice gesture. If anything it is something that validates his reputation as a class guy.

That is really sweet of George Hill.
In general I agree about him being too old to frequently go out with a high school student, but for this one time special and supervised occasion, I see no harm in it.
I knew that was coming..lol.

I don't think that has anything to do with Ploto's comments. I like George Hill, but there's no way in I'd let my daughter go to her prom with a 23-year-old either.
I can understand not letting your high school daughter DATE a 23 year old, but a special prom thing like this? I don't see any downside. Its not like Hill is cruising for easy high school girls, lord knows NBA players, even semi-obscure rookies like Hill, can have all the easy groupie tail they want. He's just doing a nice favor for a girl. Plus, his assistant is going as a pseudo-chaperone. I don't see anything wrong with it.
I think its sweet and classy. It would be like Ashton Kutcher or Shia LeBoeuf taking a fan to her prom. Not a big deal at all.
Hill's assistant will go to the prom with them so I don't know if the mother has something to fear.
