P.S. - There was one experiment where Pop played the Triple Towers with Will Perdue, David Robinson and Tim Duncan with Timmy playing the Small Forward. The Spurs held a very good Indiana Pacers team to 55 points in a game in the 1997 season with the Triple Towers starting lineup. Timmy guarded Chris Mullen.

I have this game on VHS somewhere. Duncan actually started the game defending Mark Jackson. The matchups to begin the game were:

Robinson on Dale Davis
Perdue on Antonio Davis
Del Negro on Fred Hoiberg
J. Jackson on Chris Mullin
Duncan on Mark Jackson

It's one of my favorite games to watch because Duncan guarding a point guard for a majority of the game is amazing -- especially in retrospect. I wonder how many times in NBA history a "center" defended a point guard for 30+ minutes in a game.

Also during that broadcast (it was an afternoon game on NBC) they had an interview with Pop and he said that he wasn't sure if Duncan's future is as a small forward or a power forward. Pop said that Duncan would actually prefer small forward

Oh and another reason that game is fun to watch because Jaren Jackson and Reggie Geary were very impressive defenders. Prior to Jackson "expanding" after the '99 championship, people forget how good of a defender he was. He wasn't quite Bowen but that version of Jackson might be the second best perimeter defender in the Duncan era.

And man, Geary was such a stud defender. He could have a been a Bowen level defender -- except about five inches smaller. Too bad he had absolutely no offensive game. None.

I wish Pop would go back to collecting a bunch of starving role players who just care about defense. I'd rather this team lose 70-60 than 110-100.
