WNBA Silver Stars are cashing in on Finals appearance
    San Antonio Business Journal
    by W. Scott Bailey

The San Antonio Silver Stars finished the 2008 regular season with the best record in the WNBA and a trip to the league finals.

That added national exposure has prompted more WNBA fans to purchase Silver Stars merchandise.

According to the WNBA, Los Angeles Sparks forward Candace Parker, the 2008 WNBA Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year, tops this year’s list of the WNBA’s most popular jerseys. That ranking is based on sales at the NBA Store in New York City and at WNBAStore.com from October 2008 through April 2009.

Silver Star Becky Hammon’s No. 25 jersey ranks fifth among all WNBA players in terms of sales.

As a team, the Silver Stars also rank fifth in merchandise sales.

WNBA officials say sales of jerseys on WNBAStore.com have more than doubled compared to the same time last year. The combined sales at WNBAStore.com and at the NBA Store are up 25 percent vs. last year.

Below are the player and team rankings.

Top Five Most Popular WNBA Jerseys:

    1. Candace Parker, Los Angeles Sparks
    2. Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury
    3. Lisa Leslie, Los Angeles Sparks
    4. Sue Bird, Seattle Storm
    5. Becky Hammon, San Antonio Silver Stars

Top Five Most Popular Team Merchandise:

    2. Detroit Shock
    3. New York Liberty
    4. Seattle Storm

I think the NBA and Stern stopped assisting the WNBA a few years ago and allowed them to be run on their own

Yeah, WNBA is a waste of time... I'm willing to bet that there are boys high school teams in this country that are fully capable of defeating WNBA teams...

    Becky Hammon is worthwhile though.
