Veteran NBA coach Del Harris, who spent this season as an assistant with the Chicago Bulls, is retiring.

"I would like to thank Del Harris for all of his hard work and dedication this past season," Bulls general manager Gar Forman said in a statement on the team's Web site. "He has had a terrific career and we wish him the best in his retirement."

Harris, who turns 72 in June, has been coaching for 50 years in the NBA, collegiate and high school levels, as well as overseas. He compiled a 556-457 (.549) record in 12 seasons as an NBA head coach with three different teams -- the Houston Rockets, Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers.

"I was very fortunate to have Del by my side this past season," Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro said in a statement. "His knowledge and understanding of the game were an incredible benefit and help.

"He has had a tremendous and successful coaching career that is quite remarkable. In his 50 years of coaching, he has had such a positive impact on so many people's lives on and off the court. I was truly thankful for his support and encouragement throughout last season. I can only wish Del and his family all the best."

The 1994-95 NBA Coach of the Year with the Lakers, Harris also guided the Rockets to the NBA Finals in 1981.

The 2007 Suns lost because of things they could have controlled. No one forced them to get off the bench.

The 1995 Suns would have run a train through the playoffs if not for injuries and "fluke" Sam Cassell shots.

2006 was a pretty easy road to the championship for the Mavs now that I think about it.

49-33 Grizzlies team led by Pau Gasol
Spurs- this was the hard part. and it was essentially a coin flip. Which we won
Amareless Suns- probably lose if Amare is playing

Then an aging Heat team w/ Jason Williams/Antoine Walker in the starting 5.

I guess we weren't THAT great that year, and are perhaps one of the weaker champions of all time. But alas

2005-2007 in retrospect appeared to be a weak time in the league. I'm glad the Mavs capitalized at least once though.

I agree especially about the 2005-2007 part.....it was an extremely weak time. Any other three year period and the run and gun Suns look a lot weaker than they looked, it's time for people to get over that in team,

The Mavs and Kings were jobbed badly enough that Ghazi's interpretation is valid, even if his enthusiasm is obnoxious.

But the '95 Suns just didn't play well enough. You might as well say that the 2005 Pistons were NBA champions just because Larry Brown drew up a bad play and Rip Hamilton missed a jump shot against Tony Parker at the end of Game 5. Blame Dan Majerle, Joe Klein, and AC Green for sucking for most of the series.

Hey , I'm sure that would have been a different story if Danny Manning was healthy and if Kevin Johnson hadn't been playing through injuries the entire season.

I specifically said "if not for injuries". If Manning is healthy Phoenix face s that Houston team.

It basically comes down to superstars as to why the league was weaker a few years ago. (2006)

    1. Kobe didn't have a good roster
    2. Pierce/Garnett/Allen were dispersed amongst irrelevant teams. In unison they form a strong team
    3. James/Melo/CP3/Williams/Dwight Howard/Roy were either too young or on bad/mediocre teams
    4. Yao/T-Mac missed a combined 60+ games in 05-06, so that team went 34-48
    5. Amare was out for year

Weak time indeed! Teams with Mike Bibby, Elton Brand, and Pau Gasol as the best players made the West playoffs that year. That ain't eva happenin again.

Chances are them sucking wouldn't have had such a large impact if Danny Manning was healthy.

Did you guys know Steve Nash has been on the roster of the past EIGHT teams to lead the league in offensive efficiency? (DAL 02-04, PHX 05-09)

The great Steve Nash ladies and gentlemen, the great Steve Nash

    -see sig

That MAY end next year though.

KJ played well, and Manning was always overrated even when he wasn't busy being injured.

You might as well say that the chances of the early-decade Orlando Magic being compe ive would be much higher if Grant Hill were healthy.

Portland led the league in offensive efficiency this year, and I can't be arsed to go back further, but you're probably wrong in more cases than one.

    Edit: I can be arsed.

    09 Blazers - no Nash
    08 Jazz - no Nash
    07 Suns
    06 Mavs - no Nash
    05 Suns
    04 Mavs
    03 Mavs
    02 Mavs
    01 Bucks - no Nash
    00 Pacers - no Nash

Not that it isn't still impressive.

Here Bob "I'm in re ed" Lanier (that's two people that have used that nickname now) goes again spewing bull out of his ass.

Manning was the 2nd leading scorer on that team and they were 36-10 before he got his first of many devastating injuries. It's safe to say they were the best team in the NBA by far before he got injured you stupid .
