That is how it used to be. Most people gave up their money to be the president. Presidents like Adams and Andrew Jackson were borderline poor because they spent their lives in public service. Then they had to pay for most of their expenses in the white house.

I don't know about Jackson, but Adams was no where near borderline. He had a fair amount of property. He simply would have been more wealthy than as president.
