Shaq has 3 rings btw, not 4.

    Arguably 2 (2002 was rigged)

    Duncan wins POTD thus.

]If you are only counting the 2000's, in that case, it's Shaq.[/B]

    But really, career-wise, it's Duncan.

By the way, a DECADE is 10 years.

10 years ago, on June 25, 1999 ...the Spurs won the championship.
That makes no sense. Shaq was a lot better career wise in the 90s than duncan seeing as he was an all-star for the most part of it, and duncan didnt even arrive till 97. So if Shaq had a better 90s and 00s, how is duncan's career better than shaq? Your logic doesnt add up. In his prime, shaq was the most unstoppable big man ever to play the game.

Argue all you want...but when people talk about this era, they are gonna remember two teams and three players.

    Lakers and Spurs

    Shaq, Kobe, and Duncan.
And some losers like Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks.

The real question is who's the player of the post-Jordan era.

Duncan has 4 rings, 2 MVPs, 3 Finals MVPs, the best overall winning %, never missed the playoffs, as well as more all-NBA teams and all-Defense teams any other player in the post-Jordan era.

The period between 1999 and 2009 is now formally christened the Duncan era.

Shaq and Kobe are #2 and #3 respectively despite the fact that each has missed the playoffs once, have at least 2 referee-tainted les between (2002 when the Kings got screwed and 2006 when the Mavs received the shaft) and have put up some horrible post-season performances leading to their team's defeat (Shaq in the sweep by the Bulls; Kobe vs the Pistons in 2004, Kobe vs Phoenix in 2005, Kobe vs Boston in 2008).

Kevin Garnett is #4 for finally bringing one back to Boston.

Chauncey Billups gets the #5 spot for winning a le and consistently leading teams to the conference finals.

Numbers 6 through 10 is any order of Kidd (2 finals), Dirk (1 MVP, 1 finals), Nash (2 MVPs), Iverson (1 MVP, 1 finals), LeBron (1 MVP, 1 Finals)

    LOL

    Wow

When it fits their argument to make Duncan look better than Shaq, spur fan says the Mavs got shafted, but any other time the Mavs choked.

    Kill yourself.

It appears people are basing their players of the decade based on cir stance rather than pure basketball ability and accolades.

Keep in mind in alternate universes Duncan/Shaq/Kobe may not have been put in those positions to win those rings.

So let's judge purely on basketball ability and accolades in relation to the surrounding talent.

Player of the decade: Dirk Nowitzki

    Why?

    50+ wins every year, 2006 NBA Championship, 4 time all-NBA 1st team, 2007 MVP, 9* All star, 9* all-NBA.

Also, how does he do in the playoffs v the other greats of the decade?
2-1 v Duncan ('03 doesn't count since Dirk was hurt)
    1-0 v Shaq
    1-0 v Garnett
    1-1 v Nash

pretty solid record here at 5-2

Amazing efficiency year in and year out. The offensive arsenal of a shooting guard, the passing skills of a POINT guard, the rebounding of a power forward, and the efficiency of a center. Dirk's defensive adjusted +/- ratings over the decade suggest that his defense is underrated to an extent and that he's an average defender. his amazing adjusted +/- suggests that his offense more than offsets his lack of defensive presence.

What's remarkable about all of this is that Dirk has not played with an all-NBA caliber player since the 02-03 season, when Nash was 3rd team. Dirk has never played alongside a defensive ace like Bruce Bowen either and the best center Dirk's played alongside is... well Erick ing Dampier. Only all-star Dirk's played with recently is Josh Howard, on a technicality. (although Kidd was an All-Star w/ the Nets last year).

One thing I will say is Dirk has always played alongside quality point guards...Nash/Terry/Harris/Kidd.

Dirk Nowitzki, player of the decade.

The Ogre should never be considered POTD. It's a useless argument anyway...

I just wanted to notate him as an Ogre one more time.

    Um...ever heard of Shaquille Oneal?

Four les and 6 finals appearances.

    Can Duncan compete with that?

Plus in his prime (during this decade) he was the most dominant player ever to play the game. Duncan was never as un-guardable as Shaq was.
