Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki has filed for sole custody of his ex-girlfriend's unborn baby, if it's proven he is the father, according to a pe ion filed last week in a Dallas County courthouse, the Beaumont Enterprise reported Thursday.
Crystal Taylor was arrested May 6 at Nowitzki's Dallas home on a warrant out of Jefferson County on a theft of services charge. She was served with Nowitzki's pe ion to adjudicate parentage at the Jefferson County jail Monday, the Enterprise reported.
Neither Nowitzki nor Taylor are identified by name in the court do ents, the Enterprise reported. The pe ioner is identified as "D.N.," a resident of Dallas County and Taylor as "C.T.''
Taylor's lawyer, Scott Renick, told the Enterprise his client told him about the do ents, which were filed June 12 in the 330th District Court of Dallas County by Katherine A. Kinser of the law firm, Kinser and Bates.
"We have to determine the best options, legally, to protect her rights and those rights of her unborn child,'' Renick told the Enterprise. "Our only focus in this case is to ensure the laws of the state of Texas are complied with to protect any and all rights Taylor has in delivery [of the baby] and her rights as a mother."
Taylor is accused of failing to pay for $11,000 worth of dental work in December 2004. She was indicted on the charge in 2006.
Taylor's trial date has been set for July 27. She also faces a 2000 probation violation charge in Missouri.
can we have a vBookie about Dirk being the father or not?
I would be all in for the option... "Baby is not his"
How do we know this isn't Don Nelson and Christy Turlington?
Or Dave Navarro and Carrie Tucker (Miss USA 2000)?
If Dirk's seed that he put on lockdown is male, that kid has a 88% chance of making it to the NBA.
good move by dirk. it would seem to be the best option for the child.
Add Dirk's basketball skills and that lady's aggressive nature, it looks like it'll be superstar.
Im wondering how that would work out. Seriously, an NBA player as a sole parent? I guess he could hire a nanny while he is playing basketball but still, its just weird to think of an NBA player as a single parent.
I don't know a lot about Dirk, but I think I remember hearing he's very close to his family. Maybe his relatives can help?
I think he had to do this. If it is his child this woman is going to be all over him forever for child support and whatever else she can get.
to Dirk for doing what is obviously in the kid's best interest. LMAO that the is going to lose her meal ticket; no way she is going to get anything other than supervised visitation at best.
He'll get her because the Judge is not going to award custody of a child to a woman in jail or a halfway house.
Poor Dirk..the guy chokes on the court, and now he's choking off the court..
She won't get child support if he has sole custody but she'll be part of Dirk's life as long as she's involved with the child (visitation, etc.) or until the child is an adult.
Sad situation for that child as well as both parents.
There are a lot of single parents whose schedules are worse than the NBA. Yes, he has to travel for 41 games a year, but besides that his hours are actually pretty good. I am sure Cuban has set up child care during the games for the players and Dirk only has work a few hours a day when not on the road. Plus, he has long summers off. His family or a live-in nanny can help him.
That is gonna be one ugly ass kid. He'll be a baller though. DeShawn Nowitzki 2028 NBA All-Star. Do it Mitch.
I applaud Dirk for being so active and caring in regard to his child's well being. I really respect him for that and wish him the best.
The Dallas Morning News has learned that this is not Taylor's first child-custody issue. Taylor's former housemate, Gerrick Fallon, says Taylor gave birth to three other children who are now teenagers, none of whom she raised.
And a friend of Taylor's former husband, James Westerhaus, told The News that Taylor "abandoned" the youngest child, at age 4, with Westerhaus in 1999.
Westerhaus' friend, who asked to remain anonymous, said Westerhaus is not the child's biological father and that he sent the child to live in St. Louis with Taylor's relatives.
Fallon said all three siblings – an 18-year-old girl, 15-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl – have different biological fathers and have been raised in the St. Louis area by Taylor's relatives.
"Her mother always took care of the children because Cristal was either incapable or unwilling to take care of them," Fallon said. "Because she was always [in trouble] or on the run."
