Maybe they could add Javtokas for a relatively cheap amount, maybe LLE. He'd still be a useful garbage man and enforcer.
I'm sorry, but if you were the Spurs, how can you be comfortable pulling off this deal and seeing you only have one reliable big man?

If this trade happens, there will be no way to use the MLE. (I will assume that the Spurs will stay under the tax line until they actually make transactions that cause them to exceed it)
The only new help for Tim will come from Ian, a vet min signing, or a player that could be acquired in exchange for one or more of Bonner, Mason, Finley and Hill.
RJ would represent a major upgrade at SF, but acquiring him probably means banking on Ian to play 25-30 mpg.
Yeah, I don't get how a Spurs fan can see this trade possibility and not be excited. WTF where you expecting this summer?
It certainly seems to be a great fit for the Spurs, particularly if Bowen is a cut-and-return guy.
Jefferson is a credible scorer and a reasonably good defender -- certainly an upgrade over Finley -- and in the short term at least, he could provide the Spurs with a wing who has the credibility to get the whistle on his way to the basket. Add to that the fact that Jefferson has plenty of big-game experience and it seems a no-brainer to me.
Oberto and Thomas are done.
Yeah it's weird that people don't like it ... they are trading an old KT and a retiring Oberto for Richard Jefferson. They aren't even giving anything up.![]()
Personality-wise, RJ is a perfect Spurs-type player. I can't imagine that he would object to moving down the scoring pecking order.
He's overpaid as , but at this stage in the game is better than anyone else the Spurs could even think about getting. I'd hate to give up Bruce, but I can't imagine what the the Bucks would do with him.
I'm pretty sure it's planned for Bruce to get cut and come back.
The Spurs would still need another big, but you can't pass on Jefferson just because you'd have to give up Oberto.
If it happens... this is WAY better than what I was expecting![]()
It would be a dream trade.![]()
Not being a first or second option will likely really improve his defense and rebounding. He's been slowing down a bit physically but what he'd be asked to do as a fourth wheel would allow him to be more of a specialist -- which fits his style of play perfectly.
Great deal for SA. Get them some needed firepower. Jefferson is pretty durable as well. They are back in the championship mix.
I like it more if it happens before FA so it puts pressure on Dr Buss to bring back Ariza AND Odom.
I am thrilled with the possibilty of junking Kurt Thomas in addition to the previously certain to be terminated Bowen and Oberto.
But I just don't think RJ is much of a difference maker, with regards to in-game play. Doesn't shoot well, doesn't rebound well, doesn't get a lot of steals or blocks which is disappointing for his athleticism. Gets to the line, can't think of much else good about him except to give Parker a running mate.
Outrageously overpaid.
Maybe word of this trade gets NJ or GS to offer VC or Stephen Jackson for similar deals.
In 2008-09, Jefferson averaged 6.3 FTA/gm. Only Duncan, among the Spurs, averaged more (6.4) and RJ's average puts him more than 1 FTA/gm ahead of Parker and 2 FTA/gm ahead of Ginobili.
Look at it this way: Richard Jefferson for Micheal Finley.

Hold on one second ... A GM just callled .. breaking trade ... one minute

The trade is Richard Jefferson to the Spurs for Bruce Bowen, Fabricio Oberto and Kurt Thomas ... more coming in just a second. Deal is agreed to in principle with a trade call coming later today
What? He's averaged double the rebounds of Bruce - when Bruce was starting! Better ppg, rpg, apg & ft%. , earlier in his career he averaged a steal a game. It's not terrible, and in today's market and the odds of someone actually signing here - this would be one of a deal if it went through. It'd be even better if Bowen was cut and signed back with us for extreme minimum. I'd like to see Fabs retire though, and show Mahinmi how to move around under the basket like he does.
Damn this kicks ass. It's about time we got something to go our way.
Jefferson is a much better fit on the Spurs than VC. VC would never be willing to be a fourth option. Only way VC makes sense is if you trade him for Manu.
Stephen Jackson I think is physically broken after playing for Nelson the last few years.
Looks like its a done deal.

I love the FO again.
For now.![]()
It's a win win situation for the Spurs.
Bowen gets cut and returns to the team.
Jefferson would be the ideal insurance should Ginobli go down with another injury too.
We'd still have Bonner, Mason, Finley, and possibly Hill to trade for a big man.
