Props to RC for thinking ahead and giving Oberto and Bowen deals that were very tradeable. Great forward-thinking from RC ... for the first time in a while
Sarcasm, I'm thinking I sense it...

So do the Spurs have any space to use any of the MLE? Haven't checked the numbers yet . . .
My quick rough math without Finley and only with TD, TP, Manu, RJ, Bonner, Mason, Hill, Mahinmi to be just under $69 million.

So after filling the rest to the 13 man threshold, yeah, they're probably paying the tax.

There's a 99% chance Bowen is released by the Bucks to save money. Only way he isn't cut is if Skiles begs management to keep him ... but I doubt it because the Bucks need to open up salary space.

Once Bowen is cut, hopefully he'd return. With Jefferson's added offense, Bowen's lack of offense won't be as detrimental. A wing rotation of Manu, Jefferson and Bowen would be pretty awesome come playoff time.

    It's official on ESPN!!!!

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4281291

The Milwaukee Bucks agreed to trade Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs for Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto a Bucks source told ESPN.com.

    NBA Rumor Central
The two teams have agreed to the deal in principle. A trade call to make the deal official is coming later Tuesday.

The move gives the Spurs a dynamic wing scorer to play alongside Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. The Spurs had promised to make their team better this summer and adding Jefferson for role players should give them a huge shot in the arm.

The Bucks incentive to make the trade is largely financial. Bowen, Oberto and Thomas are all in the last year of their contracts. The deal will clear $15 million off the books for the Bucks next season and give Milwaukee more flexibility for next year. It also saves them roughly $3 million this year. That may give the Bucks the wiggle room to sign one of their restricted free agents -- either Charlie Villanueva or Ramon Sessions -- next year.

Bowen, Oberto and Thomas also give the Bucks some veterans who will fill key holes for the team. The move also opens up some playing time for the Bucks lottery pick last year, Joe Alexander.

However, Bowen has a nonguaranteed contract for next season, so the Bucks could release him, further saving about $4 million next season and giving them a better chance of retaining Sessions and Villanueva. In that case, Bowen might return to San Antonio later this summer.

Personally, I think there's no way the Spurs would have done this unless they knew they'd be getting Bowen back. Just a hunch.

I find it difficult to believe that we would do this trade without further plans..the FO has to have a plan for the frontcourt..this is just a great trade..we're basically giving up Thomas and Oberto for Jefferson(I'm assuming we might throw in a 2nd rounder or two)..Bowen will be back..

as somebody else already pointed out, it looks like ownership will be willing to pay the tax..

we need to fill 1 more hole..who's going to be our starting big man next year?..

How does this change the Spurs draft? Should they just get the best available player?

For a minimum salary, what about bringing back Oberto? He's pretty much done but with those four offensive players, having his passing on the roster would be nice. His lack of offense won't matter as much now, either.

the Spurs better have something up their sleeves to get a big.

I also think that Bowen might come back. If not, then I could see them resigning Udoka.

At 37, you still just take whoever you think might make the NBA. If it's a tossup between two players, you probably do go with the bigman, though.

Yeah I thought of Mason while I was typing that ... but then I remembered how he looked against the Mavs. Mason in the regular season as like a fifth option is pretty damn sweet though

Looks like the Spurs will already be over the tax. If they want to use their MLE they're looking at a payroll of at least $76 million.

Hmm...there seems to be no way for the Spurs to avoid the luxury tax now. I would really love for them to get a solid Center, but we also could use Gooden's offense.
