Nah you still have the mle.
In terms of salary add-on, it's sorta like an mle tacked on. Sorta.
The MLE is completely intact, but with tax the cost of using the MLE has effectively doubled.

Bonner will be better now with Jefferson collapsing the D, he'll get more open looks, get more comfortable and confident.
if we can keep Gooden, we should be all right with TD, Gooden, Mahinmi, and Bonner
I don't like the sound of Gooden, not if there's better defensively at all. Screw offense, I need a talented big man on D next to Timmy if we're paying money for one. Gooden is great offensively but seems to lack the diligence required to be a good defender (one that can take turns guarding opposing superstar bigs as opposed to just Tim if you want the job done).
So assuming Finley picks up the option there's what -- nine players under contract?
Get Bowen and Oberto back for the minimum and sign the top three Toros from last season -- Hairston, Williams and Jones.
May be too slow up front; you could look for someone a little more athletic than Oberto/Jones. Nothing impossible.
I do not think that puts the Spurs past the Lakers imo. They need another contributing piece at the pf/c spot. It will be difficult. They might have to venture into the luxury tax and I do not think they will.
If they do get a center/pf, then filling out the roster with toros is fine.
Agreed. The Spurs had two holes to fill and this deal only addresses one. If they don't get a quality big, via trade for FA, then getting RJ still doesn't put them back on the short list of contenders IMO.
Of they are going to get anyone else of starting quality, there will probably have to be another trade. I was just throwing out the minimum money option.
I like the idea of Jones on this roster.
Defense can be learned, Gooden will most definitely improve in that area. the post game that he has is a little harder to come buy. and since Timmy can't really beat defenders one-on-one/create his own shot anymore, I like having Gooden around.
Vaughn, Udoka, Finley & Bonner..........GONE!!! At least I hope so.
To compete with the Lakers we do need a legit Center with length...who can play DRob type Defense! Mahimi will be a backup at best. We do not need scoring from the 'C' but, we do need rebounds & blocks ...height & length...smarts & muscle!
Now that Thomas is gone, signing a strong man like Jones makes sense.
Hey Mel.. I thought Ginobili had to be included in a trade for Jefferson?
I completely forgot about Jones. He has pretty good size, and is strong and athletic. Could be a pretty good 3rd string C for the Spurs, maybe even compete with Ian for the 2nd spot. Also, would be a cheap option.
If the Spurs want Finley back then maybe they can convince him to decline the player option and then resign him for the minimum. They can save some money there.
I'd rather get a defender than Gooden. The offense should be good enough now.
The Spurs need a shotblocker/rebounder.
Read the thread. I said that they if they acquired RJ without including Manu, they would have to exceed the tax or fill most of the remaining roster with minimum salary players. That remains true.
Can the Spurs still use their entire mid-level exception to pick-up another big? There are some good-decent bigs that are out there.
Jones just took part in the D-League's "Elite" mini camp last weekend. Scouts from 17 NBA teams were there. I guess we'll see which summer league squad he plays for.
both Ian and Gooden have the athleticism/potential to be good defenders, shot blockers, rebounders.
A REAL defensive force in this league is an expensive commodity, the other cheap options getting mentioned around here don't impress me much at all
I forgot Gist.
There's the athletic big man.
What Jones are we talking about?
They can, the question is whether or not they would want to.
Udoka definitely needs to go.
