Gist makes a huge amount of sense for next year. Lowest allowed salary and fits a need?
No reason not to bring him over.

Udoka is hopefully gone. This trade also means you only need to keep one young swingman (Hairston, Williams, Sanikidze or draft pick). No need to keep Hairston and Williams now.
Off the top of my head, but would OKC accept Mason + Finley (picks up option) for Collison?
Depends on if they are going to pretend Williams is a point guard.
Yea since we are up around the lux tax now a trade involving mason would actually be a good way to go to get a serviceable big man. IDK, will be interesting to see how the big man situation plays out.
But for the time lets all just give props to the FO for pulling off an absolutely AMAZING deal! Big 3 intact, prob can get bowen back if they want, lose two big men who didn't do much at all anyways. Steal!
Doubtful that Williams could play PG in the NBA.
This trade might discourage the Spurs from trading into the first round. They will want as much salary flexibility as they can get instead of dealing with a first round guaranteed contract.
Well, there's a reason he played the point exclusively last season before being called up.
I have doubts too -- that's why I used the word pretend -- but that's how the Spurs chose to develop him.
I think Williams as JV's replacement is actually the plan.
That was the Williams I was referring as the third string point guard. I never thought of him as a point guard but since he was doing well at that position in D-League, I thought he could be a cheap option.
Defense is not learned. Defense is all about effort. Some players are not willing to sacrafice their effort on the defensive end. And you got be kidding about Duncan not being able to beat defenders one on one anymore right?
probably bring in gist, hairston, williams all for min. i would still want to resign gooden + a defensive minded big man.
Williams could possibly play PG paired with Ginoboli in cetain lineups. Haven't seen how well Williams handles the rock, but I like his size. I'm sure if Williams makes the Spurs this year he will be riding the pine anyway.
I think Gist has got a real shot to not only make the Spurs roster, but be a solid rotation player at both the 3 and 4 positions.
We need Gist, Hairston as experienced young. We need to draft some NCAA seniors. Spurs don`t have room and time for "not NBA ready" type players. Whole roster should be filled with players, that could have impact. No time for experiments.
Look for Finley to reup and then get traded along with Bonner for the big. 5.7 mil probably at 5.2 mil.
The bench then would show young fillers like Mahinmi C, Williams SG/PG, Haristion SF, Gist SF/PF. I also got a feeling they will make another run for Pops Mensha for the bench. Add a player from the draft with Mason and Hill.
God now Goran Suton looks like a perfect fit... Goran>>>>Oberto
In 30 days Bowen, Oberto and Thomas could probably be all three on the market again...Bowen and Oberto I'm quite sure of it, Thomas probably given a buy out.
It makes sense for the bucks, 'cause Thomas is probably too old for their plans and wish to play for a contender again.
In case, I think ther's a chance we re-sign all three...so we could end this trade giving nothing for RJ.
Gooden is not coming back IMO..I was for him coming him, but it doesn't make sense anymore..we need role players now..Gooden is a score-first role player, which is something we simply don't need anymore with the addition of RJ..there aren't enough balls to go around..
Bowen will re-sign for the minimum, so that should be fine..the final perimeter spot will probably go to Hairston or Williams IMO..if they decide to play Williams at SF and have them and anybody else go at it in training camp for the final wing spot, I feel like Malik is good enough to take the spot..we'll have to see what happens though..if they're going to play Williams at PG, he'll probably be the final perimeter player on the roster, at least at first, since Pop likes his PG experiments..
this makes the most sense though..Williams and Hairston are both experienced in our system, and they would be low-cost options..it's just logical to go with one of them to fill out the perimeter..with the RJ trade, you probably can't have both in there..
Gist should be a given now, assuming he plays well enough in SL and in training camp..he should be good enough to play the energy big man role off the bench, or the small-ball PF..
Ian is a no-brainer..low-cost option, and the Spurs have invested time and effort in him..he needs to be important this season..
so it looks like our best option to get a big man will be to trade Mason, Bonner, and/or Finley..
I'm liking the youth approach though..RJ is only 29, Hill is a given if he's still on the roster, Ian is a given as well if he's healthy, Gist should be in there, and probably one of Hairston or Williams..
something I haven't seen many people mention so far..if Kurt Thomas gets bought out, would he be interested in returning?..I would love for him to return and play a bench role for the minimum..
Tell me some big vets without ring ? Perfect suit for Spurs IMO
How many project players do you want on the Spurs? I'm more than fine with carrying a few of those guys, but 6? No thanks. There's going to be some quality vets who can be had for league min dollars. The Spurs need to get a couple of those guys too.
6 is definitely way too much..
I expect there to be Ian, Gist, and either Hairston or Williams..3 seems like a good number..
