Pistons trade Johnson for Bucks’ Oberto

In an effort to clear more salary cap space, the Detroit Pistons have sent forward Amir Johnson(notes) to the Milwaukee Bucks for newly acquired Fabricio Oberto(notes), a league executive told Yahoo! Sports.

The Pistons plan to buy out Oberto’s deal and make him a free agent. The San Antonio Spurs sent Oberto to the Bucks as part of a four-player trade for Richard Jefferson(notes) earlier on Tuesday.

Oberto is expected to re-sign with the Spurs.

Wouldn't mind him as a 12th man, but we really don't need him...unless, of course, we can't get anyone else.

In that case, either Mahinmi is expected to contribute next season or Bonner (+ others) will be moved.

I wouldn't mind him coming off the bench to be productive. Manu and Fab have some great chemistry on the court together.

I don't like that at all. Time for the team to move on and go with younger, more athletic bigs. In the new NBA, where athletes reign, Tim needs to be surrounded by athletic bigs - Ian is one, and I hope he is all I think he can be, but I don't see fab fitting a team need. We need an athlete who can grab boards and block the odd shot, and Fab doesn't do much of either.

Nothing personal, but I don't want Fab back. That guy is the biggest hunk of nothin' this side of Carson Daly.

Very strange considering RC's comments about Bruce. Oberto was in the same situation as Bruce, but Bruce actually played well when given time and had no health issues.

Big men and heart problems are usually not a good combination. He couldn't be counted on to fill in any extended minutes, if someone got injured.

He's got a lot of local knowledge, and he works well enough in certain situations. I wouldn't mind seeing him play an enforcer role at times, either. But can you picture him getting playoff minutes at the end of next season? If not, the roster spot would probably be better spent on a younger player.

Oberto was fantastic for us during the 2007 run. Unfortunately, I don't think his health problems will go away any time soon.

In a heartbeat. This guy possess that key "corporate knowledge" Pop rants about, especially at the currently depleted C/PF position. Plus, Fab is not only smart but one of those players that gets under the skin of the opposition. You need at least one of those on your team.

Exactly, I find it hard to believe. If anything, I thought the Spurs would bring Bruce back.

Fab should not be playing hardly at all. Only in blowouts and select situations. So not a big deal, but why "go a different direction" and then bring Oberto back.

Then that makes Mahinmi and Bonner the 3rd and 4th bigs, assuming the Spurs keep both.

Yup. Does not really do anything to the rotation. Just a trusty vet/locker room guy to have around and practice with.

We need some semblence of an impactful big, not another spare like Fab again. We do NOT improve by bringing back Fab. All he does is exist.

Eh, I don't think bringing back Oberto precludes other big man pick-ups. Give it time.

As a 12th man, I'd like it. But the Spurs need to sign two more bigs that are better than him.

Oberto is a quality bench player. Who knows how much the heart condition limited him last year. After surgery, he might be more active next year. I think it would be a great pickup and he'll probably come pretty cheap.
