That's probably the 4th or 5th for me, actually.
My first thought is:
Followed by the hours I spent listening to Thriller, followed by the hours I spent as a young dancer memorizing each step of "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" as soon as the videos were released, and eventually I think of my Michael Jackson doll lovin' up all my Barbies.
Don't assume it's an age thing. I grew up with parents who instilled a love for all music in me. The Jackson 5, Prince, Run DMC, The Four Tops, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Mills Brothers, Fred Astaire... this (and more) is the music that made up my youth, despite the fact I was born in 1978. I get the importance of Michael Jackson, believe me. As a dancer, it's impossible not to. The point I made is that it's hard to mourn his passing today when, in my eyes, that happened long ago. His death is tragic, but so was his life. As a pretty hardcore fan of Michael through the Bad album, the fact that he died isn't significantly more hurtful than watching the artist I loved as a child slowly turn into a joke.
I didn't say they were all pleasant memories.
I've seen the prelims; turns out he died from food poisoning.
Poor guy couldn't resist 13-year old weiner.
MTV is doing some kind of special on him Kobe and Fabulous talked.
LA County Coroner speaking now, live on CNN.
Autopsy cause of death deferred, additional testing ordered. 4-6 weeks to complete, then they'll issue a final cause of death. There was no indication of foul play.
They placed a security hold on the investigation, they'll release limited information until the tests are back.
+1
I don't know whether he was or wasn't a child molester (although it's difficult to ignore the out of court settlements), but I'm surprised by the reactions (not only in this thread) saying "I don't care if he was a pedophile, he was a great musicina, dancer, artist....)
WTF?
Do these people also say "Who cares if he executed over 11 million Jews, the guy was a wizard with ceramic tiles, you should see the bathroom he did for us in Bertesgarten! RIP Adolf".
???
If you think he's innocent that's one thing, but if you're willing to forgive him because he knew how to carry a tune...
If Hitler did the moonwalk I would ignore him killing a bunch of Jews.
Sweet it's good to know I have a new fan. If you will do Hari Kari i will send you a free tanto.
I had no idea this would get this much coverage. I mean EVERYBODY is covering it. Talk radio, spanish radio stations, cable news ... everyone.
I think it's because pretty much everyone alive today, with the probable exception of generation Y, has known his music in one way or another. In the early 70's he was big with people who are 50-70 years old now. If you were born in the late 70's well it's a given that you were gonna grow up a fan... and even if you were born in the mid 80's (like myself) you still heard Dangerous before he started getting really weird.
Like that thread TD started a while back. Whether you hated, or loved the guy, he WAS a name around the globe that damn near everyone recognized. Even my grandmother who is 86 with dementia still knew who he was.I was shocked. This coverage of him doesn't surprise me the least bit. he even had links on sporting sites like ESPN and CBS Sportline. That is the first time I saw that before I must admit. No matter what type of music you listened to I can just about guarantee everyone knows who he is. (Well knew who he was).
The thing I thought about for most of the day after I heard the news was Michael's legacy. He's a rare breed in my opinion in that he cornered the market with his brand of entertainment....so much so that "heir apparents" such as Ne-Yo, Justin Timberlake, and even Usher can only walk in his shdow rather than expand off of what Jackson did and take his art to another plateau. All of his personal demons and troubling headlines aside, he worked to perfect his craft and as a result dominated his field even when he wasn't as relevant a name on current musical charts.
Hmmm... did Michael convert to Islam?
I remember hearing his brother Jermaine say at the end of his statement that he hopes Allah watches over him.
Unless that's a Jehovah's Witness thing...
Trust me dude, IT'S NOT!!!!
Unless Jermaine has and was using that as his religious point of reference.
Official cause of death.....
He choked on an 8 year old weiner LOL
Wonk wonk, rather weak trollage and not worth the use of CAPS.
Well sorry. I thought it was damn funny. I'm sorry I don't see a need to mourn the death of an alleged pedophile. Death is sad, but three are more pressing issues in the world to be concerned about.
I'm still curious if the story about him giving himself the name the king of pop is true.
I knew he was a pedophile already, but an egotistical one on top of it?
I always heard he gave it to himself, but it's being said now that Elizabeth Taylor gave him the nickname.
The joke was lame and juvenile at best. If there are more pressing issues than the death of an alleged pedophile who changed the audio/visual landscape of the music industry, then why stop in to post....concentrate your energy on more important matters.
Who, in our generation, has NOT tried to do the moonwalk? Anyone who denies it is a ing liar. I was born March 10th 1980, I grew up listening to Michael.
I hate the person he became and compltetely disconnected from him when I saw him dangle his kid from a balcony (that was the LAST straw, I had already started to part ways before that). Before that I was a fan of his work (not a big fan, just a fan).
I prefer, like I said in the NBA forum, to believe Michael the performer died at around that time. Michael the person was different and I couldnt understand him at all. He was a freak. I still at this time believe he at least did something that would at best be considered inapproriate with children. I mean, come on, you where accused of molestation and the best you could come up with was that you didnt molest a child yet you had them sleeping in your bed but yet paid millions of dollars to settle? He was practically a billionaire, couldnt he fight to clear his name? Come on.
Michael the entertainer is a completely different story in my book though. The guy was a ing genious. I had so disconnected with him over the past 10-15 years I completely forgot how magnificent his music video's where until I started looking them up again. Now I miss him and thats a part of the tragedy of his life. He could have been the greatest of all time.
the guy Transcended religion for s sake, nevermind color or place of origin. The dude was a ing icon and affected people all over the world with his music. Name ONE artist that has affected as many people as Michael and I will strait up call you a ing liar. Michael was the real deal and its a sad day that he is gone and didnt get the chance to revive his career.
Note: If he DID molest anyone, and IF there is a higher power that governs these things, I hope he burns for it but at the same time I thank him for what he did in his time here on Earth. When he performed, he connected people and thats a powerful thing.

It's a freaking joke. I'm not going to argue the fact that it is or isn't juvenile for obvious reasons. I used "alleged pedophile" because I don't remember if he was ever convicted or not. I just see no reason to celebrate the man's life (my opinion). Okay, he changed the landscape of the music industry. You can say that of many musicians..ie.. Evis, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Beattles...I could go on & on. Currently, my energy is concentrated at a cure for my boredom.
Still feel the joke was lame and the pedophile debate could go on for a while with no clear cut resolution.
As far as his talent level, read the my opinion on his legacy a few posts earlier....I think that is what separates him from many innovators in music across genres. I'm not a hyperbole person myself so you won't here me throwing out the term GOAT anytime soon, but the dude really stnads alone in musical history IMO.
I probably shouldn't have carried such a hyped up tone in my previous tone and if you don't celebrate any aspect of his life that's your right, but the "I have more important things to do outside of focus on his death yet I'll still post in a thread about it" seems kind of contradictory to me.
