I heard the interviews but I'm not sure how many did. Here's what I remember that kind of caught my attention:

It was pretty refreshing hear R.C. talk pretty candidly about how they viewed the last two years. Acknowledging that they felt Manu's injury in '08 was the difference-maker against L.A. and that the reason they didn't pull the Jefferson trade at the deadline last year, is that they felt this group still could get it done.

Because of injuries and uncertainty with the likes of a Hill (admitting the Mason experiment was only due to the fact that they weren't sure about Hill and the playoffs) they weren't sure exactly what they had, or how close they were to the elite. The way the year ended though, convinced the front office that significant moves were needed in order to be able to compete moving forward.

R.C., like Pop, acknowledged that they were looking to get that starting big with the MLE. Jason, prefacing he knew he couldn't talk about specific player, brought up 'Sheed and told R.C. of Duel's offer to sweeten the pot by mowing his ('Sheed's) lawn and washing his car if he signed, R.C. then joked that maybe they could put a billboard in his yard ala Sac. to persuade him.('Sheed definitely sounded to be there #1)

R.C. was careful to not sound as giddy about Blair and McClinton as he did on draft night, somewhat trying to temper some of the expectations, but you could tell he was definitely excited about these prospects.

He made a point of talking about how good their training staff and Pop are about dealing with injuries/health concerns, and actually made a good point in that Blair may see a more rigorous 82-game schedule, but the practice time would be significantly less on the NBA level.

I also found it quite amusing how they simply ignored Blair falling down the draft board because they figured there was no way of him lasting to their pick. They took notice as the second round began but figured he'd definitely go then, since the risk of those knees wasn't all that great in the second round. Needless to say, they were ecstatic with the pick and the quickness of which it was made, he acknowledged as proof of that.

R.C was on both 760 and 1250 but Jack only made an appearance on 760.

Jack was on with Taylor and the guy sounded pretty damn excited.

He's a Baltimore kid and fan of the Raven's but tried to score a couple of points by saying he was a fan of the Spurs growing up. Taylor kind of called him on it, so I think he said he was a Bulls fan growing up (shocker) but did always like the Spurs and especially Avery's story. (Because of how they said he couldn't shoot, yet he nailed that game-winner to seal the Finals in New York.)

Regardless of who he rooted for then, he admits he's all Spurs now.

He acknowledged that he's always been questioned and looked over because of his height but remains undeterred and driven to prove the doubters wrong.

When asked about his chances of making the team he seemed extremely confident/driven. He acknowledged he's a capable defender and stressed if he's asked to go out there and just focus in on locking someone down, that's what he's going to do.

He also admitted that he woke up at about 6:15am because he was too hyped to stay asleep, so after he went and got something to drink, he decided to go run a couple of miles. He absolutely can't wait to get to work. (Jack and Gist's boundless energy should be fun to watch.:crossfingers)

While R.C. made it pretty clear that Jack isn't guaranteed a roster spot, he seemed quite confident that his shooting should translate, even if shooting isn't always as easy to predict or get a handle on. What might bode best for Jack though, is how R.C. answered how they viewed finding a backup-point in free agency.

R.C. stated that the backup-point was not a significant concern and that Hill and McClinton would be competing for it. R.C. seemed quite sold on Hill and felt he'd seen enough of Hill to know they had a capable backup, but him sliding McClinton in to the equation (and just the way he said it) leads me to believe he expects Jack to be on the team.

    Summer league should be fun...

    Very good writeup. Thanks

I only heard RC on 760. (Available at http://ticket760.com/cc-common/podcast.html)

But that's some good info you posted. Hopefully the other interviews will be put online at some point.

The R.C. interview on 1250 was significantly better because they actually approach an interview with some professionalism and prep-work.

They didn't ask and/or know enough to probably field the kind of questions the sick puppies like us would've asked, but they did a good job for the casual fan.

I don't really have a problem with Taylor, he actually does entertain me for the most part, but he might want to do a little research and give himself some type of runsheet if he's going to get all the questions that need to be asked, asked.(It's like he's just having a conversation with some dude and asks whatever the pops into his head. Not so good.)

I figured most probably missed and/or were unable to hear it from living out of the area, so glad I could do my part.

And that would be one of those questions that sick puppies like us would've asked.

There was no mention of S.L. but I'm assuming Marcus will be there, and hoping that Malik will.

Malik's not under contract with the Spurs, so there's no real obligation on his part, but I've got to believe he's going to be there.

I didn't hear the 1250, but the Taylor one, yeah, it was pretty weak, typical for San Antonio media. He wasted what little time he had with what was probably an attempt at humor repeatedly telling Buford about how Taylor didn't want to hear about Splitter anymore in his fake radio voice. Then he wasted more time by asking a "Don't you ever take a vacation?" type of question. Pure garbage.

Yes, it would have been nice if an SA radio/tv host had a clue and some marginal insight to ask these kinds of questions.

    1. Will Marcus Williams and Malik Hairston be on the Spurs SL team?
    2. Have you secured any undrafted free agents for the SL team? If so who are they?
    3. Is Ian Mahinmi fully healed and ready to go?
    4. What is the status of the following: Viktor Sanikidze, Robertas Javtokas. Are they completely off the board or is there a chance they could be on the roster?
    5. Will any prior Spurs camp players be on the SL team? Any Toros?
    6. Is the coaching staff for both the Spurs and the Toros to remain the same next season?
    7. Why aren't you considering Nando De Colo for next season when he is technically available to be with an NBA team?
    8. Is surgery off the table for Tim Duncan's knees? (Taylor sort of asked a general health question, but phrased it poorly. He asked "Where is Timmy" in the kind of 'where is he health-wise', RC answered it in a 'where location-wise is Duncan kind of way).

That's just off the top of my head. There's probably a dozen better questions with regards to scouting and personnel alone. Not dumb questions about free agents that RC can't talk about until July 1st anyway.

All good questions and I generally share the same sentiment.

    As for:
Yes, it would have been nice if an SA radio/tv host had a clue and some marginal insight to ask these kinds of questions.
I try not to be too hard on these guys because I understand I'm definitely not in the "norm" when it comes to how closely I follow my team. But it definitely would be nice to have some people on the mic who informed and even helped to create a more knowledgeable fan base by actually taking something more than a generic passing interest in the local team.

I'm not asking them to break down the C.B.A., just, in addition to the day-to-day following of the team: keep the listener up to date on prospects, generally have enough knowledge to be able to understand how to successfully make trades, and actually listen and learn from people who can help you out with some of the trickier subjects.

I give Peter Burns credit for reaching out on this board and actually displaying a thirst for knowledge of the Spurs and other local subject-matter. (I think Jim Bob has that same want-to when it comes to the Spurs but he lets Taylor almost minimize and suppress some of his Spurs fandom. J.B. just needs to be J.B. and and not allow himself to turn into a complete pushover-clone of Mike.)

Taylor and J.B. seem like pretty decent guys, as do Chris and Jason, I just wish they had the thirst and love to follow sports the way a Freddie Coleman does. (I think that's the guys name; works for ESPN and basically one the few guy's who actually seems to "get it.")

I knew losing Ludden would suck, but I didn't realize how much more knowledgeable Don Harris would look in comparison to the rest of his media brethren...

    Not good at all.

well, both stations are pretty awful. I remember the day of the Kurt Thomas trade, 1250 with Duel and some other people spent their show talking about nachos and butts and other crap.

Both stations are SO terrible, that next week I'm actually contacting a station who has the best sportstalk show in the country and offering to pay to get them streaming or for full downloads. Right now they only have interview downloads. And compared to Mike Taylor's "You must never get a vacation, huh? Hey, don't bring up Splitter to me man. I'm done. No Splitter, just get me a press release." garbage questions the downloads are like solid gold.

I'm willing to pay hundreds of dollars a year to get non-local sportstalk even if it's on a 24 hour-48 hour download delay because the local stuff, including the guys who come on this board asking basic questions that most posters here know in their sleep, the local stuff is terrible boring garbage. I'll spend hundreds for 12 months of real SPORTStalk, but stations in San Antonio couldn't pay me to listen to segment after segment of unfunny would-be comedians who can't hack morning fm gigs pulling their weak "Last night I went to HEB-Listen up holmes-Cougartalk-I ain't playing that-let's compare armhair-let's all laugh at each other's crap-What's your favorite cereal?-pornnames" crapfests.

Because the show I'm talking about has competance and analysis of Sports in an intelligent and interesting way, and when the Spurs are discussed which is actually quite a bit compared to other NBA teams it blows away these 210 clowns.

Sports radio, in general substance, is pretty much terrible all over the board. I mentioned Freddie Coleman, and there's a couple of others that I respect, if not agree with, but good knowledgeable personalities are few and far between.

It's entertainment and less and less sports talk, nowadays.(Too bad the entertainment isn't all that entertaining, though.)

I've come to accept that if I want to get informed or have a genuinely good conversation about sports, it's best done at a place like this.

I try not to take myself too seriously, in general, so I don't mind the sop ric locker room banter you get on the radio. Just give me someone who actually has a decent comprehension/grasp of their sports and I'm fine. (Suggesting Yao trades for LeBron or extolling the greatness of a 7' chihuahua like K.G., or openly questioning if a team that finished with the 3rd seed in the western conference last year, all while being riddled with injury, is in the top 5 this year is not what I'd call a good comprehension. But maybe that's just me.)

Jack was on with Coach Alexander this morning and although most of it was more of the same, there were a couple of good moments:

Jack was asked if he's worried at all about transitioning from the college to NBA 3, and pretty much laughed it off; pointing to the fact that he was never one to toe the line or even be limited to NBA-range. In fact, playing on a team where he isn't the focus, he feels should get him plenty of open looks.

He was also asked about the type of success he's had playing against number one-ranked teams in college, where he averaged around 30 a game.

Jack explained his success as living for those kind of moments and loving to prove his self on the biggest of national stages. Noting, you've got to want those games/moments and always be prepared to fail. (In other words... Yeah, I'm clutch.)

He's looking forward to showing what he can do in the upcoming S.L. namely: playing defense, running some one, bringing energy, being a vocal leader, and maybe shooting the rock a little.

As for running the one, he feels he's plenty capable of taking on that task. His rationale? After Paul, Williams, Nash, and Parker (the elite point-guards) there's a lot of points who have plenty of success being able to just bring up and take care of the ball, initiate the offense, and being capable shooters; something he feels will suit him just fine.

Jack describes himself as a "gym rat" and isn't worried about any sort of rookie wall. He figures the more games, the "funner" it is. He's constantly looking to get better by paying the price in the gym and has never lacked the energy to do so.

He's really comes off as having a great at ude, being full of confidence, yet humbled by being looked over enough, that he brings the right kind of work-ethic to be successful.

    Sounds like a "Spur."

Jack will wear 33, if it aint broke being the rationale, but it also allows him to carry four 3's on his jersey at all times.

Jack's latest interview with 1250 had him compare his game to playing cards, with his shooting being the ace...

    Jack "Ace" McClinton?

Oh, and Hollinger is not a fan. His best-case scenario for Jack is a very poor man's House.

    I'll agree to disagree.

His second interview of the day was with Chris and Jason, and he did mention that he was on his way to the gym as soon as the interview was over.

The guy's chomping at the bit, and the fact that he's got a seperate press-conference from Blair, (tomorrow) has got to be a good sign for him making the team.

    Some thoughts I had from Blair's press-conference:

They aired the press-conference live on 760.

A couple of things that stood out to me:

R.C. and Pop want the questions about his knees to cease. R.C. went out of his way to make that known, even cutting DeJuan off a little bit after he answered the first knee question. Good move, imo.

Secondly, They believe they're going to get the 4 they need in free-agency. R.C. was quick to say he wouldn't get into specifics, but you could kind of read between the lines...

    And Finally...

DeJuan Blair is an "ass-kicking-4."(R.C.'s words. )

R.C. never thought that the "ass-kicking-4" hole could have ever been filled in the draft at 37, so he did admit Blair's addition changed the urgency of finding another big lessen; at least to some extent.

    DeJuan "A.K.-4(5)" Blair?

Needless to say, they were ecstatic with the pick and the quickness of which it was made, he acknowledged as proof of that.
Can someone post the video or link of the Spurs making the Blair pick? I'd like to see how fast they made the selection.

I think anyone who has ever conducted a job interview can relate to this: I'd rather see a potential employee that is flat-out eager to work with us, and start learning how they can improve, than one with a nice resume and experience but a "I'll let that speak for itself" kind of at ude.

You cannot replace enthusiasm, and in many respects it is quite difficult to genuinely teach people to display it.

The analogy is quite basic and obvious, but it does work.

From what I've heard from both McClinton and Blair (and RJ), these guys WANT it. Genuinely want it. They want to play for the Spurs, they want to win, and they want to do whatever it takes to do both.

Yeah, RJ is an incredible athlete, but he WANTS to "be relevant again."

Yeah, Blair is a good rebounder, but he WANTS "to kill."

Yeah, McClinton is a fantastic shooter, but he WANTS to work.

Their resumes are nice, but I'm excited about what they want.
