The Spurs chances of getting Camby just took a hit if this is true -- the Clippers trade Zach Randolph to get Quentin Richardson back.

Word had been that the Clippers liked Randolph best of the bigs and would try to trade Kaman (but he has an untradeable contract) or maybe, reluctantly, Camby.

Good. The grizzlies will continue to suck. Between OJ Mayo and Zach Randolph jacking up shots Rudy Gay will be lucky to get 10 shots a night. Lots of rebounding opportunities for Thabeet though........

How long until Randolph is on the Lakers? Walton for Randolph straight up sounds right.

Or maybe Morrison for Randolph. After all they got Pau for Kwame Brown.

Bad Michael Jordran Draft Picks + Grizzlies GM = Lakers All-Stars.

    Sources: Clips trade Randolph

    ESPN.com news services

The Los Angeles Clippers opened a starting position for No. 1 pick Blake Griffin on Wednesday.

    Randolph

    Richardson

Power forward Zach Randolph was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies for swingman Quentin Richardson, sources told ESPN.com's Chad Ford. The deal was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.
The trade can't be finalized until the league establish the salary cap July 8 and lifts the moratorium on player movement.
The Clippers acquired Randolph from the Knicks last November to fill the void left by Elton Brand signing with the Sixers. Randolph averaged 20.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest in 39 games for Los Angeles. A knee injury cost him time, however, and the Clippers limped to the worst record in the league.
On draft night, the Knicks traded Richardson to the Grizzlies for center Darko Milicic. Richardson won't play a game for Memphis. The nine-year veteran averaged 10.2 points and 4.4 rebounds last season. He now returns to the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2000 draft.

There are at least two proven NBA owners (and probably more) who are only interested in putting the minimum product on the floor and raking in the TV money: Heisley of the Grizz and Sterling of the Clips.

Sterling just positioned himself to have max money to throw at LeBron in addition to another $6-$7 million to sign a supporting player in 2010 in addition to whatever lottery pick they get. Sterling's cheap, but even he would have to see the enormous money he could pull with James (or Wade) there. He could charge Laker prices and have every seat and luxury box sold with that team, and pull Lakers profits.

That's a very good point. LA fans are fickle, especially Laker fans, who are morons on top of being fickle.

So if the Clippers start winning and bring in a real superstar like LeBron or Wade, fans will flock to see them. I don't consider Baron Davis a real superstar, nor does he play like one consistently.

But with the pieces the Clips have right now, they could conceivably be in position to make some noise in the West in two years. That is if they bring in another coach. I like Dunleavy as a person, and maybe as a GM, but he can't get those guys to play hard. Plus, they seem to get injured way more than other teams' players, so I've always thought that Sterling goes cheap on the training staff as well. Weird franchise.

I've sat behind the bench at Clips games a few times, and players routinely turn around and talk to Penny Marshall during the game. Tim Thomas made it a point during a loss to the Rockets to let Penny know that he really liked the cookies she brought the previous game. Just weird. The Clips are like your local hgih school team who hasn't had a winning season in 10-15 years. Everybody likes them, but kind of it a pity way, like they feel sorry for them.

Why in the world would you take Zach Randolph's contract?

There better be some ridiculous draft picks involved.

Even then it's probably still a stupid, stupid trade.

I would expect this to be:

    Clippers get:
    Quentin Richardson

    Grizzlies get:
    Zach Randolph
    2010 first round pick
    2012 first round pick
    a future second round pick
    max cash considerations

Even then, I'm not sure I like it if I'm a Grizzlies fan.

Not so much. You have outside scorers in Gay and Mayo, and you have a defender in Thabeet, but who is going to be the go to guy in the low post? Gasol is alright, but not a 20-10 guy. And Memphis is the one team who can take the risk with Randolph as his contract expires the same time as Mayo.

I agree that the Clippers get the better end of the deal contract wise, but Z-Bo is still a solid player, and his jail blazer days were a few years ago. Some Knicks were sad to see him go until they realized that they had a better shot at LeBron with him gone.
Yeah, but do you realize the financial favor that the Grizzlies just did for the Clippers?

    Quentin Richardson: 1 year, $8,700,000

    Zach Randolph: $16,000,000 in 2009/10, $17,333,333 in 2010/11

The closest trade to this financially in recent memory:

Phoenix Suns trade Kurt Thomas and first-round draft choices in 2008 and 2010 to the Seattle SuperSonics for a second-round draft choice and an $8 million trade exception.

So the grizzlies cleared cap space by trading Paul Gasol for kwame brown and peanuts. To then fill in that cap space by adding the worst contract in the NBA a year and a half later by getting Zach Randolph???

    Wow Chris Wallace...Just WOW
