    I don't really know if I would like the idea but I was thinking would it help us? Say if we could get Toronto to use their mid-level exception on Shawn Marion and then we could trade maybe Bonner, Finley and a future first or second round pick? Maybe just without the pick but they may not do it. I'd only really do this if we can secure Rasheed though. Then try sign Gooden back (even though he is not ideal) for the vets minimum when he realizes there is no money out there for him. A team of the following would be pretty nice;

    Parker/Hill
    Mason Jr/Manu/McClinton
    Jefferson/Marion
    Duncan/Blair/Marion
    Sheed/Gooden/Mahinmi

Don't know if I like the idea of having Shawn Marion, I would feel more strongly about it if we didn't get DeJuan Blair. Don't know if I like my own idea here yet....

    Thoughts?

I think he would just be good as another defender for people like Odom, Dirk... The guys we usually have trouble with. Besides, we could always use another rebounder. We would need Marion more then we need someone like Michael Finley....

We really wouldn't be giving up that much. Especially if it was just a trade for Bonner and Finley, that was basically my question? Would we want a *free* Marion?

Toronto renounced his rights to sign Hedo. That means no S&T for the MLE, since they can now only sign him for the minimum.

Shawn Marion is an extremely limited half court offensive player who chafes at playing a role. I've never understood the man love for him from some here. The ONLY skill of his that I ever somewhat coveted was his rebounding, but we've got that covered now with Blair. Marion would HATE playing only 14 minutes behind RJ. I can't ever see him signing on for such a role.

Not a prime-time player. When his atleticism drops off, so will his usefulness. Ego issues don't make him Spurs material.

Marion was a fantasy basketball beast at one point, and I think that makes him seem attractive to some. But he's proven to have been a system guy who struggles when forced to play outside of the 7 seconds or less sort of system. I think his defensive abilities have always been overrated and I think his relative inability to score consistently in non-break situations makes him a guy who looks much better on paper than he does on the court. Add to that his now-notorious problems accepting a role and I'd pass.

If the Spurs are going to package Bonner and such for a player -- an idea that I definitely support -- the quest (I think) should be for another bruising sort of rebounder or a truly defensive wing. Even if trading for Marion is feasible or if signing Marion was possible, I don't see him filling either of those needs.

I really don't see that working...Sheed, Marion and Gooden...Those three alone are or probably think they are worth more than the MLE...If we had that kind of roster we would be considered the NY Yankees of the NBA?....

That trade scenario won't work, and I know we're already stocked at SF, but I will say this (becuase no one else has): this guy can guard positions 1-5, 1-4 legitimately. He would look great in a Spurs jersey IMO, and it would be a great option to provide defensively versatility AND rebounding. All that said, I don't see it happening...

i agree with the marion defense part i still think we need a proven SF that can still play D behind jefferson,of cours grabbing a big guy is our only hole in the lineup but i wouldnt be suprised if spurs would somehow talk to marion to take a 1/LLE contract to win a championship if he desires but would be suprised if he took it

Couple of years ago, he could have guarded 2-4, but he's never been able to check 1s like Parker or Iverson, or big brute 5s on the block.

I agree, but your talking about the cream of the crop at both point guard and center there. I could see him on Kidd, Mo Williams, Greg Fisher, Steve Blake. His length could disrupt any SG who makes his living from the perimeter. He could also be great closing the lane against faster point guards.

As for 5, we shouldnt need him to cover the biggest guys in the league, cause we aren't trying to cover up the defensive deficiencies of a useless center like Amare.

I agree. He was a decent defender, but not as good as the media made out. They got so excited over his versatility, that he could guard parker & duncan in the same game, that they never bothered to watch that he didn't shut down either.

Who could ever shut down TP or TD?

I'm shure Pop would love to incorporate this guys versatility into the defensive gameplan...

Also, I think he would definitely help with the teams who seemed to torch us from the perimeter last year (Cleveland, Orlando, Lakers, Philly)

The problem is, he's always whined about his shot count, and has never been willing to play a role. He ed his way out of PHO, the perfect gig for him.

I've read interviews by former teammates of Marion who say that he doesn't care at all about winning. Zero. That's a trait that automatically makes me not like a player.

Even someone like Allen Iverson cares about winning. He may be selfish on top of that but he wants to win. Marion doesn't and thus I'd never sign off on him being a part of the Spurs.

I recall an interview with Marion a few years ago in which he was asked if he'd give up being a second banana with a contender like the Suns for the opportunity to be the big dog with a marginal team.

He took a long time to answer that question.

thats a sick fantasy lineup you got right there

but it aint going to happen. the matrix is like trevor in that he wants the kind of money he deserves, i dont see him signing for a discount. he's probably 50% more expensive than trevor too

Not quite yet- his agent is working fast and furious to create a way for him to be S&T because if it does not happen, he will surely have to accept the MLE.

If we were to get Marion (which our FO has zero interest in) I would announce to all the Faker fans here that I would join them in rooting for the girlieboyz in La La Land. Please, NO Marion...he is a cancer!!!

that's a of a lot to give up for a backup. I know everyone on spurstalk is ready, willing and able to help Bonner and Finley pack up and leave, but this is a little nuts.
