HOUSTON - The Houston Rockets used the NBA Disabled Player Exception to sign free agent forward Trevor Ariza, according to general manager Daryl Morey.

The NBA granted the Disabled Player Exception based on the fact that Yao Ming is not expected to play next season because of his broken left foot.
"As a course of business to give us maximum flexibility, we applied for an injury exception for Yao and it was granted by the league," Morey said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports on Wednesday.

"That will allow us to use the Mid-Level Exception to improve the Rockets roster going forward."By granting the Disabled Player Exception, the NBA is agreeing with the Rockets that it is unlikely that Yao will play during the 2009-2010 season. However, it does not rule out Yao's return. Also, in the unlikely event that Yao does play next season, the Rockets would not be penalized.

The value of the NBA Disabled Player Exception is identical to the Mid-Level Exception. They both begin at approximately $5.8 million per year.
The Rockets chose to use the Disabled Player Exception on Ariza because the NBA only allows it to be used on one player. The Mid-Level Exception can be broken up and used on one or more players.
While Yao is not expected to play next season, he has yet to determine how he will treat his injury going forward.

"I am still considering what course of action is best," Yao said in a statement to FOX 26 Sports issued through his agent John Huizinga.
"Once a decision has been made, I will let people know and I will proceed with the same high level of optimism and dedication that I have had in the past. I look forward to returning to play as soon as my recovery allows."

Nice move and now that is the reason they did not help out the Lakers with a S&T. So maybe the Lakers are not confident about Lamar being back, they just had no choice.

I thought they couldn't apply for the exception until the year after he was out.

Stern loves his ca$h cows (note the s) in the league. It is the least he could do for Yao.

Cool move by the Rockets. Still having the MLE, they can still pick up a decent big man. That would be interesting if they picked up Allen Iverson

As for the Lakers, without getting back the MLE in a Sign&Trade, the most they can hope for is a vet minimum player (if they let Odom walk). Seems to me the Lakers will re-sign Lamar at any cost now.

It seems that you are not, in fact, in control of the meaning or interpretation of the NBA's operational rules.

Houston tried the S&T first. LA is the ones who wouldn't agree. No doubt they'd rather S&T Ariza and still have the MLE and Injury Exception to play with/

Thought the same, but I guess it's true.

    4) Disabled Player Exception. A team may replace a player who suffers a season-ending injury with one player making up to 50% of the injured player’s current salary, up to a maximum of the average player salary. The Disabled Player Exception is available in the following cir stances:

    (a) If the player is injured between July 1 and November 30 and is determined to be out for that season, the team has 45 days to use the Exception; or

    (b) If the player is injured between December 1 and June 30 and is determined to be out for the subsequent season, the team has until the following October 1 to use the Exception.
