You need to download purplera1n at http://www.purplera1n.com so far most things work that would work on 3.0 however winterboard does not. Ive installed it and testing it now so far so good though.

That was quick. There's also a vulnerability through SMS that will be demoed in BlackHat in Vegas at the end of the month. Supposedly the author of the hack already alerted Apple and they're working on a fix.

We got a new seed of OS 3.1 beta 1 two days ago... hmmm....

I got my iPhone 3GS and had it jailbroken as well. I can't believe how fast the phone is. My main pet peeve with my old iPhone was the lag I would get when playing music/checking SMS/email. While the 3GS isn't revolutionary, it's pretty damn good.

First of all, I want to make very clear the risks in jailbreaking:

    They are essentially nil.

Why is jailbreak amazing? Well, I'm typing this to you on my laptop. I'm currently traveling at ~60 mph on an Amtrak, using the tethered internet from my iPhone's carrier signal through AT&T. The cost of this? $30 for the PDAnet program from junefabrics.

A lot of stuff that makes jailbreak good is included in the 3.0 release. However, with jailbreak you can skin your phone, completely customize how it looks, operates, and sounds, and download thousands of programs, sounds, and extras that are not included in the standard release.

It does void your hardware warranty. If you need service and go in to an Apple Store or send the phone in, you'll be denied. Just make sure if you do go in/send it in you have a nice "legal" unhacked phone when you do.

so there's no risk of turning my phone into a brick like what i've read about before? if so, what are some jailbreak programs and which are better? also is it true that all apps are free on a jailbroken phone?

so uninstall the jailbroken software before you take it in?

I haven't heard anyone bricking their iPhone while jailbreaking since the stone ages.

The two jailbreaking programs are purplera1n or redsn0w. I used purplera1n because it was out first, and the creators of redsn0w were holding out until recently. They both should work equally.

Jailbreaking your phone gives you the ability to use user-created apps. You have the ability to used "cracked" apps from iTunes, if you choose to do so.

Yeah, i think it used to happen. Luckily, even if something does wrong during jailbreaking now, you can always restore your phone to normal.

No, but if you update your phone after jailbreaking, it erases the jailbreak.

If you need to take your phone in for maintenance, back everything up that you can, and flash the software back to it's original specs (any Apple approved update).

That is a correct statement don't update after jailbreaking. Red snow is an unlocking tool not a jailbreak tool. Unlocking is to make the iphone work on another network. Jailbreaking allows you to run third part apps, customize your iphone with various themes, graphics and download free pirated apps that you would otherwise pay for. I buy the ones I like and delete the rest. The program you need for pirated apps is called installous, cydia comes with Purple Ra1n and allows you to download unauthorized third party apps and themes.

Redsn0w is a jailbreaking tool, not an unlocking tool. You're thinking of ultrasn0w, which is available on cydia after you've jailbroken with either purplera1n or redsn0w. I used redsn0w to jailbreak my 2G iPhone for 3.0, but then used purplera1n for my 3GS. But my friend jailbroke his new 3GS today with redsn0w.

Theres no reason to put cycorder on your phone you have a 3gs it has a camcorder and a better one at that with twice the frame rate of cycorder.

Regarding snapture it was also a 3g written program for the 3g camera, so it probably has not been updated for the 3gs yet. If you look close at the release dates of the programs or under more info you can usually conclude if an app is pre 3gs, but you can try to install anyway and if it doesnt work delete it, get cydelete it allows you to delete cydia apps the same way you can delete iphone apps.

huh. didn't know that about the cycorder. there are other apps that i'm getting thru cydia that just won't open. vWallpaper is one and the iphone video recorder 3.0. also i have the camera come up when i double tap the home button and now that's not working. i double checked it and it's still set as that in the settings, so......also there was on update i did that put my phone in safe mode and that was annoying. is there a lot and trial and error with this jailbreaking stuff? it's mildly annoying at this point.
