    Roy wants max extension

Brandon Roy to Blazers: "I've done everything I can."

    by John Canzano, The Oregonian
    Friday July 10, 2009, 2:25 PM

Brandon Roy told KJR radio in Seattle today that he's frustrated and disappointed with the Trail Blazers handling of his contract extension negotiations. He talked a lot about the hard work he's put in, and all he's done to make his dreams come true, and about being patient as he watches the good days and bad days come down the pipeline.

He wants to get a deal done and is confused as the rest of us as to why the left brainers in the organization are standing in the way.

I wrote about the Vulcan influence we're seeing on the Blazers operating procedure in today's column. I have the interview and will replay a portion of Roy's interview today on the Bald-Faced Truth radio show at 3:05 p.m. and we will discuss, but here's a couple of quotes from Roy.

On watching the negotiations: "I sit back and think about all the hard work I've put into my dream... excited about the opportunity to provide for my family. I go in... knowing that I've come into the league and I've done everything I can do to get a max contract."

On how he feels about the negotiations: "It's 50-50 right now... I'd love for something to get done so I can move forward and meet free agents..."

On whether he was involved in the Hedo Turkoglu recruitment: "Not playing much of any role. It's hard for me to go out and recruit Hedo for five years when I have only one year on my deal."

Well played by Roy's camp. It's absurd that the organization is misplaying this negotiation so badly. Sign the guy already.

Already trouble in paradise. tlongII, you need to keep your franchise in check.

Although, once again, I'm sick of multi-millionaires talking about "taking care of my family" because they have to settle for $3.9 million in salary for one year or instead of a $100 million max contract, they get an $85 million contract.

I'd love for reporters to ask some of these players that say this if they'd rather have a max contract and be on a first round exit team for the rest of their career or get a really great contract worth around $14-15 million a year and have a legitimate chance at competing for a le for many years to come. I wonder how many would answer honestly. I wonder how many would honestly settle for a few millions less to be on better teams.

Would you want an idiot willing to give more money to his employer on your team?

I don't understand what Pritchard's deal is with the 5th year. Brandon Roy is undeniably the star of the Blazers and, in my opinion, the biggest star and best player the Blazers have had since Clyde Drexler. Just give him the 5th year and move forward. There's other pressing matters in Rip City.

On the other hand, if Roy is really that serious about wanting to get the deal done so he can "move forward", then take the offer, move forward and get ready for the upcoming season.

Normally I don't side with the player who wants more (unless the GM/Owner is trying to shaft him) but, in this case, I take Roy's side.

Agree to some extent, except for the part that Roy just isn't a Max Contract guy. 15 mil for him a year sounds about good to me

LA getting the max is laughable

Roy does deserve a max contract though. definitely a top 10 player

That Portland GM could try doin' to AldrIdge what Ainge did to Rondo: just tear him a brand new asshole in the papers in hopes that it'll re his perceived value. Though I think Rondo ain't gonna be deterred. LOL.

I'm tired of whiney players. If they're not giving you what you want after year 3, shut your mouth and play your ass off. After year 4, when they try to talk extension, accept the one year qualifying offer on the first day possible. After year 5, leave.

completely agree with this part. the pure greed on the part of alot of these guys is just sickening. id love to have to 'settle' for a tad less especially if it meant my team could improve because of it.

Your franchise player is having problems with the front office while the Blazers have already had an awful offseason. Yeah, it's a non-issue

I don't think Roy is a max player. He is very good but he will need plenty of help if he wants to win a championship.

Roy is at best a 25/6/6 player. Easily deserving of a max contract
