Likely he will retire, but it it worth making a phone call?

With a $10mil payout the money shouldn't be a factor.

For the 15th spot and for the minimum, it's alright.

I mentioned it in the other thread:
Dice and Big Ben are close friends. (there were speculations that this might help to bring him to the Cavs last season, before he went back to Detroit)
well, maybe Dice calls his old friend. for the vet min I'm all for it. Ben's 40 minutes production is still significant enough to want him on the bench. (11 RPG, 2.2 BPG, only 2,5 fouls per 40 minutes).

I think he could provide spot minutes at the end of the bench and bring some nice energy and defense. But for anything more than the minimum, no.

Yeah I'd agree to a point. Cut Williams, send McClinton overseas sign Gist and Wallace and our line up will be something like this

    Parker/Hill
    Mason/Manu/Hairston
    Jefferson/Finley/Gist(Toros)
    Duncan/McDyess/Blair
    Wallace/Ian/Haislip/Bonner

that's 15. If a Bonner+Finley trade comes up then we'll have that extra roster spot Pop likes to have.
I'm deffinitely not against Wallace for the vet min, but do you see Pop going with 7 bigs on the roster? Alternatively, if we assume Bonner would be traded to make room, we'd have no big who is a 3 point threat, don't think Pop would like that.

If we get him for the minimum why not? He is 34, but like someone said earlier to have him around like Dikembe was for Houston, he could even ride the bench like Sam Cassell in case of injury.

With that said, I would also like the spurs to explore a few more trade options before settling on Wallace. We need a bigger center and to see how the Summer League plays out.

Wallace blocks shots, Oberto doesn't. We need a proven shot blocker. He can ride the bench and be a just in case guy worst case. Oberto is more likely a risk for any amount of money because of his heart.
Wallace used to block shots. He doesn't do much of anything anymore. So, you want him to block shots on the bench?

Bringing in a defense-only, past-his-prime veteran reeks of the FO's previous philosophy, and I think they'll try to resist it...but ultimately they'll probably give in and pursue.

And why not? As with Bowen last year, Big Ben would not be a starter but instead would be called on to provide an intimidating presence defensively. In my mind, he'd complete the overhaul of the frontcourt.

Bottom Line: He certainly wasn't worth the $15M/yr or starting spot that he received in Chicago and Cleveland...but as a bench guy for the vet min...he makes a TON of sense for the Spurs. I expect them to go after him.

The Spurs are pretty well stocked in the 6-7 to 6-10 frontcourt player category. If we're going to add another frontcourt player I'd prefer someone 6-10+.

For the vet min, he'll have no shortage of suitors. I think it'll be hard for him to walk away from the game this year.

Agreed. Big Ben is MORE THAN ENOUGH defensive and rebounding presence for the Vet Min or LLE.

    Sign him, FO!

That's of course, if Blair doesn't sit out until he gets the ENTIRE LLE.
