With Blair being the one who probably will get some playing time. Not to mention second year players Ian And Hill.
Agree and disagree. I think he's mostly hanging out on the perimeter because his previous attempts to operate in the post have often times ended badly...getting pushed out of position, forcing turnaround jumpers or just flat getting his shot blocked.
I actually think Gist can be most effective if he starts from 15-20ft by facing up and either nailing the J or using his supreme athleticism to blow by the defender and finish strong. Two things wrong with that...1) his J is not reliable YET and 2) he hasn't shown the ability to put the ball on the floor.
But, if he could add those two things to his repertoire, he could be a bigtime asset to the Spurs down the road.

Uh, I don't see how his game is less complete than Finley's. Then again, I don't see how Fin's shot is significantly better. Fin scored 18 against the Mavs and still managed a -20. That's legendarily bad.
I don't know, regular season seems like Malik would be better off getting those minutes with Fin getting a few and more as the season goes deep. Keeping Fin fresh and still in game condition around playoff time.
I'm going to have to watch this game again to see where Hill's turnovers came from. I remember about three or four of them but six?
I know at least one was bogus. Hairston inbounded the ball to Hill in the backcourt but it was from the baseline so that wasn't allowed. Somehow Hill got credited with the turnover![]()
His defensive potential is 10X that of a 35yr old Finley if not more...but I think he actually has a bit more to learn there. Shutting down Sonny Weems is one thing...shutting down an NBA player is another.
I think Hariston's defense NOW is better than Findog's. And now that he has added some range to his game, I would like to see him eating up Fin's minutes.
Hairston has improved his jumpshot, but if the game was on the line and you had one or the other shooting a 3-pointer, who are you going with?
Plus, Pop LOVES the guy. If he's still on the team by the time the regular season starts, he will get the minutes behind Jefferson and Hairston will be sent to Austin....book it!
Just a few thoughts. The first quarter was difficult to watch with all the TOs and Hill's lack of execution with Mahinmi in the high screen/rolls. It didn't look like Hill was even looking to see if Ian was open when they trapped it.
The Spurs settled down in the 2nd. Blair was awesome, Hill was more aggressive and the Spurs started feeding the post...something they would have success with off and on the rest of the game. Ian Mahinmi seemed to hesitate less and he took the ball up stronger and drew fouls with a sense of purpose. It made me wonder if Blair has rubbed off on Ian.
James Gist had a couple of nice plays but it's become clear that he and McClinton will have a tough time making the team this year. At least McClinton didn't hesitate to put it up tonight.
"Taylor the Failer" must have played the slots all night. Eddie Doucette, legendary broadcaster with the Milwaukee Bucks and several other NBA teams needs to retire. His interview with Pop was hard to listen too. I was wondering if Pop was going to start asking Eddie questions so that Eddie could talk more.
That is all.
Wow, I missed the game and just read this thread from beginning to end, and this is my early favorite for comment of the summer. I'm more pissed I missed this than I am missing Blair's solid game.
I think we knew all 6 guys (Hill, Blair, Mahinmi, Hairston, Gist, McClinton) weren't going to be on the Spurs final 15 man roster. Getting 4 of 6 on is amazing if you think about it. If Williams makes it, that's 5/15 extremely young players on the 15 man roster, with (theoretically) Gist, McClinton and Splitter playing overseas. Not many playoff teams can say that.
You'd like to see it and truthfully so would I...but I don't think it would hurt if Hairston wasn't on the opening day roster and instead continuing to improve his game in Austin...and I think it's a definite possiblity.
on a side note: Anthony Morrow had 47 points against the Hornets, a new Summer League record. Anthony Randolph on the same team tied the record with 42 the other night.
Randolph is a beast. Barely 20 years old, 6'11, athletic, skilled. Watch out for this guy.
Yea Pop loves Findog to much to not see him in shorts.
But even if Hairston do start the season at Austin, I would like the spurs to give him a "Mahinmi" treatment to let him watch behind the bench once in a while.
Does anyone know when we can see the replay of the game on NBA.com again? Does it get archived right away?
I'd hope he has a lot more to learn, but given Fin's defense last year, I'm not sure Hairston couldn't have spelled him even then.
Watching it back...Hill with 4 to's in the first 3 minutes. One block, one bad pass, one over-and-back that Hairston actually threw, and one loose ball that ended up off his leg. Only a couple of them typical PG to's.
Mahinmi would be considered a rookie.
Someone put up a stat that Hairston's percentage in the clutch is really high, and it seems like he always hits shots at the end of a shot clock or quarter. Fin's had some good shots in the last few years, but he's not head and shoulders more clutch than Hairston has proven to be. In addition, you're far less likely to need a last second three pointer if you don't let your guy go off for a career high. Did I mention the -20 performance?
Donnell Baylor and "eye-an" Mahinmi...awesome
Anyone know if Timvp is going to post any game thoughts?
I'll concede that point. Defensively, Hairston now is better than Fin.

once again.. sorry..![]()
So that's nine assists and two turnovers the rest of the way. Not too shabby. As I mentioned I think he had six assists and 0 turnovers in the 4th quarter.
Finley is a better all-around shooter with a more consistent, pure stroke. He's proven.
But I can't disagree that Finley's defense (or lack thereof) negates his better shooting stroke.
