I think Tony did and played well. Manu was a vet pro when he actually came here so he didnt.
Summer Stars

TONY PARKER, G, SAN ANTONIO
If the Spurs were concerned about filling the void left behind by departed veteran Avery Johnson, rookie point guard Tony Parker's play this summer should help put their minds at ease.
For a 19-year-old Frenchman who hasn't faced much stateside compe ion, Parker showed tremendous poise and ability against NBA-caliber players. The speedy 6-2 guard averaged 19.5 ppg, led the tournament in assists with 9.0 per game and did a good job of taking care of the ball.
As for his role with the Spurs next season, Parker already understands that playing with Tim Duncan and David Robinson will make his pro career that much easier. "Penetrate, pass the ball and hit the open shot -- that's an easy job," said Parker.
Haha, confidence has never left Parker it seems.
Nice find D228 ! Tp as always straight to the point lol
Manu didn't and mainly because he was playing in the World Games.
+1
But i'm sure timvp would have put Blair in there instead of Gist....and rightfully so.
Nice find.![]()
TP has waited for this moment all his teenage years and was getting up at 3 o'clock in the night to see NBA games. So the motivation was definitely there, but still, to translate this into NBA success is still very impressive, especially at 19.
And the confidence was already there![]()
19.5 and 9.0 are actually pretty damn solid summer league numbers. And the confidence from parker is always a great plus.
Nice find D228
I remember also in an interview in his rookie year Tony stated he was here to help the Spurs beat the lakers. So, no Tony has never lacked for confidence but more importantly Tony has never stopped working on his game since he came into the league.

TP was first in assists and steals, and 4th among the scoring leaders.
http://www.nba.com/jazz/news/rmr_stats_index.html the box scores aren't available but the recaps are. 29 pts for his first game !
Yeah its fair to say, the rest of the league went "oh the Spurs found a point guard...." after that display in summer league.
Manu also played for Argentina that summer and sprained his ankle pretty badly during compe ion. Two reasons he wouldn't have played for SL.
Damn, nostalgic article. Good find.
Tony Parker owned the summer league.
DUH
he owns the hole nba![]()
I thought I remember reading the Spurs were offered a trade for Parker that included Gary Payton after Parker's impressive summer league.
