Free agent Lamar Odom(notes) plans to return to the champion Los Angeles Lakers with a four-year contract, according to a report on ESPN.
The deal reportedly would be worth as much as $33 million, including the Lakers' option on the fourth year of the deal.
Odom, 29, averaged 11.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists for Los Angeles last season. He had also been considering rejoining the Miami Heat, for whom he played during the 2003-04 season before joining the Lakers.

Spurs are much improved. If we have a healthy Timmy and Manu come playoff time with the new additions, they can beat the Lakers even with Odom..

    Wait a minute.

S y Smith of ESPN was on the local radio out here and she said that Portland came into it late and offered a 5/40 million dollar deal. Is that even possible?????

It's been confirmed by ESPN. Lots of talk about it in the NBA Forum too.

    Dang.

The only reason I don't like it is because the Lakers didn't need to get stronger than last season. They were already ahead of the pack as it was. With Odom and Artest...they arguably did.

Time to play the games, fellas. Bring it on.

as I said from he beginning...Odom never was interested in Miami...It was only to put pressure on LA

no problem with hin beeing in the mix...I don't see him making the matchup difference against us anyway

    LA's Offer
    Year 1: $7,127,430
    Year 2: $7,875,810
    Year 3: $8,624,190
    Year 4: $9,372,570 (team option)
    Total: $33,000,000

Based on 10.5% raises. However, only $23,627,430 is guaranteed

    Miami's Offer (full MLE)
    Year 1: $5,854,000
    Year 2: $6,322,320
    Year 3: $6,790,640
    Year 4: $7,258,960
    Year 5: $7,727,280
    Total: $33,953,200

Based on 8% raises. If Odom makes more than $953,200 in 2013-2014, the Lakers' deal is better. He'll be 34, and there's no telling what he'll have left in the tank then.

I'm kind of puzzled, though. The Lakers could conceivably cut him loose after three years, and he'll be 33 with limited market value by then. Combined with the taxes that will cost him ~$660K, and Miami's offer is bigger by ~$1.2M. A close decision, and I'm not surprised that he stayed in LA (they're a much better team), but it's much closer than I thought it would be.

Kudos to Kupchak, et al, because they saved quite a bit of money.

Buss won't forget this, and will likely butt him by cutting him to save the last year's salary.

If the stories are true, Odom went from rejecting both 3 yrs/$30M and 4 yrs/$36M to turning down 3 yrs/$27M, and finally accepting what is basically 3 yrs/$24M. I don't see any way that the Lakers will actually pay that 4th year.

according to ESPN, odom gets guaranteed $27 million because the fourth year will have a buyout of $2 million. either way, he still got 3yrs/$27 million, which according to the same article was the lakers' original offer.

Great news. The Lakers are clearly the team to beat now, puts pressure off the Spurs as all the pressure is on the Lakers now to repeat with that stacked lineup. If healthy the Spurs can give them a huge fight in the playoffs.

Nothing that we didn't know already. Odom wasn't going anywhere. He was just forcing Buss to reach deeper into his pocketbook.

Unlike the Spurs the Lakers have never had issues repeating.

they've already made back to back Finals appearances with the same team.

Pressure has never been an obstacle for San Antonio. And the pressure was squarely on LA last year to win and they did. Pressure has nothing to do with where these two teams will end up at seasons conclusion next year, the best team will win and thats that.

    They already have.
