If the kid gets his GED AND gets better basketball experience AND gets paid while doing it...awesome for the guy. It's certainly not for everyone, there is a certain level of talent, focus and maturity that should ideally accompany such decision.

The whole point of education is to:
a) Pick up the skills and knowledge to be able to make an honest living
b) After a formal setting to learn the knowledge you are interested in

Tyler is getting both by playing pro ball in Europe.

TP went pro at 16. No such thing as college ball in Europe. These players have the advantage of playing professionally as teenagers.

Let's be honest, the guy would get practically no "informational" education in a year in college taking underwater basketweaving for athletes. The rest of the experience he will gain in a similar fashion playing professional basketball- such as life lessons, responsibility, and bonding with teammates. He will develop more independence playing BB in Europe than by sitting in some dorm at some college.

Why do we not hear the same complaints about rich white kids who play tennis turning professional at young ages? Or skaters or gymnasts who train 8 hours a day as pre-teens?

Initially I reacted the same way you did. But what is the difference between this Tyler kid and people who drop out of high school to start their own business and go on the make millions. While my personal belief is that you should finish school, people can argue that guys like Tyler are just ahead of the curve.

In order to receive a universally recognized high school diploma, the parents have to make the decision and pay to enroll their child in a correspondence course with an established school.
I know this because this is what my parents did for me.
