my advice would be to just joined a mac specific forum, there you might get much better help. but if you want my opinion smack it around a few times, show it whose boss, sometimes you need to show them who wears the pants in the relationship
I have a mac, and the warranty just expired. The speakers don't work. When I try to turn the volume up or down, the image that displays the volume level appears, but like this:
Searching online, most of the problems are solved by messing with the headphone jack, which has a red light around it, indicating the mac thinks the phones are still in. But I don't have this red light. Also, not only can I not hear anything, the songs in my iTunes won't even play. If I select them to play, it just stays on 0:00.
Can anyone help me out? I would prefer to not take it in and pay to fix it, but if I must, I must.

how long ago did the warranty expire? if it's within a month call Apple.
have you gone to settings and see what your settings for audio are?
