Even though I would rarely use it for games (god of war 3) that's an excellent price considering the fact it IS a next gen gaming console, has a large hdd, and most importantly plays blu-ray.
Due out around September 1st, the slimmer PS3 will consume 34% less power, be 32% smaller, and "have all the same features" of the PS3.

While I admit I'm not much into gaming, that's a fair price.
that's a damn good price
Damn, that thing looks slick.
Looks nice, but it still doesn't have the les. Pretty much anything worth buying on PS3, you can buy for XBox.
I'll drop the money for a Wii and Zelda before I jump back onto the Sony ship.
MGS 4
God of War 3
GT 5
Infamous
KillZOne 2
Dude, Resistance.....
GoW 3 is all I care about. I beat MGS when I had a ps3.
The other ones? Meh
uncharted, uncharted 2
Ok ok, you win with God of War III.
Damn, I want to play that game.![]()
Still only 2 ports? That sucks.
Those are charging ports. All Ps3 controllers are wireless and only need to be recharged occasionally.
Looks like a good system. I don't know why, but I don't really like the look of it from those photos. I think it looks kind of bland, like a standard DVD player. I wonder what kind of backwards compatibility it will have, if any. Still, the lowered power usage is nice.
What you mean charging ports? When my 60 gb broke, we had to trade it in for an 80 and it was a to play Rockband on. We needed to hook up this external USB.
Good point. I wasn't thinking of Rock Band. That does kind of suck, but at least the Ps3 is fully USB compliant.
For that price I'll definitely get it.
Per G4:
Given that Sony didn't make a note of it at its GamesCom press conference, most assumed the impending slimmer version of the PlayStation 3 would not have backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 games. In the official press release announcing the new hardware, this su ion has been confirmed: there is no compatibility.
"Note: This product is not compatible with PlayStation 2 games," reads the release.
Does this influence your thinking about the new model at all?
A little. It kind of sucks, but $299 for a top of the line blu-ray player with the features it has is still a pretty damn good deal.
You can say the same thing for the ps3, pretty much anything you get is going to be multiplat, the age of the third party exclusive is over. It died when MS paid rockstar 50 million for exclusive dlc and no one bought it.
both systems have good first party exclusives coming up, Mass Effect 2, Left 4 Dead, God of War , Uncharted 2, the list can go on for both sides
Sony isnt going after xbox users with the price drop, they are going after people who haven't bought a next gen system yet. I think you failed to realize that before your post.
No. people who understood what Sony was doing already knew there was no BC, the fact is there is a development team working on a solely software emulation of the PS2 on the PS3, if and when they do, it will be involvedin a firmware update that will be free for all non BC ps3 dating back to the 20gb launch model. And why free, because then then can add ps3 classics onto the Playstation store and start charing 10-15 bucks a pop but digital DL's of games, thats where the will make up for all the r&d loses 10 times over.
300 for a blue ray player and ps3 combined?
hook me up
anyone wanna buy my Backward compatible ps3 for 400
