The Dodgers are moving closer to an agreement with right-hander Vicente Padilla, major-league sources said, and could sign him as early as Wednesday afternoon.

The team has a dire need for starting pitching, with Hiroki Kuroda possibly heading to the disabled list after being hit in the head with a line drive on Saturday. And with veteran John Smoltz expected to sign with St. Louis, the Dodgers have turned their attention to Padilla, who is expected to clear release waivers Wednesday.

Los Angeles would only have to pay Padilla roughly $100,000 over the remainder of the season. That is the prorated portion of the $400,000 league minimum salary.

Padilla is earning $12 million this year, and the Rangers will pay him a $1.75 million buyout on a team option for 2010.

Padilla is 8-6 with a 4.92 ERA in 18 starts this season. His professionalism has been questioned at various stages of his career, but he would have some incentive to be a model citizen over the next six weeks. In Los Angeles, he would be pitching for a first-place team while attempting to position himself for a new contract.

    ------

I know this guy is a loon but we're desperate for pitching and you'd think he'd be on his best behavior for the next 6 weeks, this is a good move for the Dodgers imo.

Going from a hitters park in the stronger AL to a pitchers park in the weaker NL West, I think he could put up better numbers. Just about anything is better then Schmidt or Weaver, even a nutcase that throws at everyone like Padilla.

I hope this happens, and that he gets beaned when he has to bat being in the NL. Then let's see if any of his teammates are laughing from the dugout.

I would suspect he wouldn't be throwing at people as much or at all if he knows he actually has to go to the plate now, or maybe he is that stupid.

I just hope he's alright. He got that swine flu not long ago. I have nothing against him. It's not like he took off. The Rangers dumped him. He has a right to go play elsewhere.

That's fine if that's your opinion, but stop trolling every Dodger thread with your when your team is a complete joke. If you were a Giants fan or a Rockies fan you'd have the right to talk some but you aren't, your a fan of a team 17 games out.

Good move by the Dodgers, Padilla is a solid pitcher and was run out of Texas for no reason other than he hit other team's batters. OH NOES!!!!

    Padilla >>>>>>>>>>> The knuckler.

Padilla will be good for the Dodgers Saturday.
