Greenpeace Leader Admits Arctic Ice Exaggeration

    Wednesday, 19 August 2009 09:38 | Written by Phelim McAleer & Ann McElhinney |

The outgoing leader of Greenpeace has admitted his organization's recent claim that the Arctic Ice will disappear by 2030 was "a mistake."

Greenpeace made the claim in a July 15 press release en led "Urgent Action Needed As Arctic Ice Melts," which said there will be an ice-free Arctic by 2030 because of global warming.

Under close questioning by BBC reporter Stephen Sackur on the "Hardtalk" program, Gerd Leipold, the retiring leader of Greenpeace, said the claim was wrong.

"I don't think it will be melting by 2030. ... That may have been a mistake," he said.

Sackur said the claim was inaccurate on two fronts, pointing out that the Arctic ice is a mass of 1.6 million square kilometers with a thickness of 3 km in the middle, and that it had survived much warmer periods in history than the present.

The BBC reporter accused Leipold and Greenpeace of releasing "misleading information" and using "exaggeration and alarmism."

Leipold's admission that Greenpeace issued misleading information is a major embarrassment to the organization, which often has been accused of alarmism but has always insisted that it applies full scientific rigor in its global-warming pronouncements.

Although he admitted Greenpeace had released inaccurate but alarming information, Leipold defended the organization's practice of "emotionalizing issues" in order to bring the public around to its way of thinking and alter public opinion.

Leipold said later in the BBC interview that there is an urgent need for the suppression of economic growth in the United States and around the world. He said annual growth rates of 3 percent to 8 percent cannot continue without serious consequences for the climate.

"We will definitely have to move to a different concept of growth. ... The lifestyle of the rich in the world is not a sustainable model," Leipold said. "If you take the lifestyle, its cost on the environment, and you multiply it with the billions of people and an increasing world population, you come up with numbers which are truly scary."

I wonder what Al Gore thinks of this? And will he back down on any his claims about global warming? Didn't he have a prediction about NYC being underwater in the near future?

Hey, DeJuanita Doofus, you can't establish geologic or climatological trends over a 30 year period.

What does the record tell you over the past 500 million years?

I personally, like the part of this graph that shows the consistent average downtrend. Doesn't matter, we aren't losing ice. Polar bears <<<< white man.
But if you look at the trends, you see more than normal ice in the 80's then less starting in the mid 90's till 2007 and it starts increasing again.

Really. Since late 2007, it's increasing again!

That's just the Northern ice. The southern ice is in far better shape. I contend that the northern ice isn't thinning because of global warming, but because of soot falling on it from Asia's increased coal powered plants. BC captures more heat from the sun instead of reflecting it, then melts the ice.

Now if this was "Global" shouldn't the southern ice be at the same increase or decrease and the northern ice?

    What's different...

Coal fired power plants, mainly in China being built with their growing economy, that does not use clean burning technology.

Hear about the smog cleanup before the Olympics?

I was both pissed at that propaganda and dismayed at how stupid the left is for believing that propaganda about the Polar bears.

If it was widespread, why did we always see the footage of the same unfortunate polar bear?

What was it? Only one group of 17 polar bear groups were in any danger.

If the left was so concerned about polar bears, they should have sent Al Gore or Leo up to the Arctic to rescue the polar bears. Okay, maybe not Leo. From what I've heard, Leo is pretty dedicated to saving energy and global warming.

Ice comes and it goes. Earth warms and it cools.

As far as I know, it's always been like that.

What's the argument again? Is it getting warmer or cooler?

well..duh, I hope so. Be very weird if it wasn't going in one direction or the other.

    and so it goes...
