Just an interesting look at how many points a player generates for his team given the number of possessions that player is involved in - kind of a way to justify how much a particular guy should be touching the ball.

Kind of ridiculous, basically, what this is trying to say is that shooters would basically suck in this rating system and that players who score inside more would have a more favourable rating.

Well, this stat pretty much tracks efficiency, which shooters in general don't really score high in anyway.

A PG would really suck in this rating, as he would be almost always be touching the ball in every single possession, but wouldn't necessarily score or create an assist. (Check CP3).

On the other hand, a 3 pt shooting specialist would have a high rating because he wouldn't see the ball unless he is wide open every time.

The rating doesn't speak to the how many times a player should touch the ball at all, because I bet a player like Roger Mason would see his "efficiency" plummet if he get more touches per possession.

You need to go back and read the definitions provided.

The charts provided show CP3 with one of the most favorable ratios of points produced v. possessions accounted for in the entire NBA. Mason's chart shows him to marginally inefficient. (Bonner, OTOH, is quite efficient)

There are point guards with positive ratings and point guards with negative ratings. There are 3 pt shooters with positive ratings and 3 pt shooters with negative ratings. As long as you compare like players to one another (i.e. don't compare a pg to a post player), this is an excellent tool to differentiate between players based on offensive efficiency.

    My bad.
As long as you are comparing people who play at similar positions and in a similar role, it does give a good indication of their efficiency, but I read that the model is comparing across all players.

Besides, I can do that with scoring, shooting %s and assists anyways.

Wade is really doing all the scoring on the Heat. It's crazy.

Isn't that what PER is for?
