Maybe lazy is not the right adjective. I've met many union guys (and civil servant) who don't have a healthy amount of fear of losing their jobs like non-union non-govt employees do. I don't know the best way to describe that at ude.
I'm not so sure. Darrin doesn't really do nuance.

So workers should be scared about not being able to support their families?
I can guarantee you from my years studying Psychology, workers who are afraid of losing their jobs are on average far less productive, and less healthy members of the workforce. They are more stressed out and take more sick days as a result.
The UAW is a really bad example of what a union should be, but we still need them. Their demise has coincided with the rise of big business and runaway increases in the salaries of executives.
I would think you would understand better than most, given where you live and work. I used to work at an injection molding plant that was a vendor Ford parts. That plant has since moved to Mexico, but I can still recall the kind of carefree at ude that many of the employees had. They just wanted to make their bare minimum quota and get the f out of Dodge.
If that's true, then we wouldn't need unions. Companies would find it in their own interests to offer workers sufficiently good job security. Why would they want unproductive workers?
As the sole bread winner in my family, it is always on the back of my mind.
I said a "healthy" amount of fear.
Agree. Obviously there needs to be something or someone looking out for the rights of the employees, but it shouldn't become a death sentence for the employeer (kind of screws said employees, doesn't it?).
Job security is solely a function of a company's profitability. It's not something that companies have a decision over whether or not to provide. Company making money = job security. Company not making money = no job security. Whether you're in a union or not has nothing to do with it.
I think you're missing my point. I was trying to explain why unions are stupid.
Except when the union seriously eats into the profits, right?
I think when it comes to something like tires, there's more than just the cost of union wages and taxes. Environmental issues are probably the biggest cost. China not only undercuts us on labor, but we tax production, then spend extra for being more environmentally safe. Maybe we do need a special tariff. On that taxes the lack of pollution controls that China has. Add in a cost that figures how much cheaper their energy is because they don't use scrubbers. Same thing with the environmental costs we bear and they don't for the waste disposal difference.
I'm ready for a war that will spill green rather than red.
Evidently I am. My bad.
And you failed at it.
So tell me your point about workers' feelings and the nanny unions. Please.
And also, why would companies want unproductive workers?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Myself, I hate unions. They lump me in with all the substandard workers and hold my wages down to the same as the lazy libs I work with.
I have generally made more money in non-union jobs than in union jobs during my 35 years of work experience. Go ahead. Talk out your ass.
Doesn't matter who is eating up the profits. No profits, no jobs.
What about all the overhead that gets eaten up at private companies by profits?
What about it?
Obama joke, sorry. Did you watch the speech?
So have I, but they usually end up over really quick or they try to short change me on a renewed contract. I see no need for unions for most places nowadays, except for the lowest earners. UAW workers are CLEARLY not the lowest earners.
Yup, profit doesn't necessarily create jobs. You just need productivity more than anything, that sometimes can create profit. A non-profit can often create more jobs while having zero profit.
WOW, thanks for agreeing with that nonsense!
So you say profit is the only way to create jobs? Is that what your saying? There are several types of businesses that run on a people = income standard. They only way they get more, is if they hire more people, but not necessarily achieve profit.
