The idea with charcoal isn't really being able to erase - it's messy by nature (check out some William Kentridge for examples - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7WtFZKwdtc), charcoal is for being able to get your subjects down on paper quickly, which is how you improve your technique. More drawings = more practice = better drawing, and this way you make good use of your time. Also, if you're in a pinch and don't have proper charcoal "fix", you can set the drawings with hairspray so the black doesn't get everywhere. Don't be afraid to get a little messy, though - you're looking for form, not necessarily pristine execution. Doing charcoal will help improve your drawings with other mediums.
At any rate, I don't have my portfolio here in Michigan with me, and the few figure drawings I have online are in pen and prismacolor, like the following:
But, that is an example of doing studies on subjects - looking at one thing from several different angles and trying to do them in rapid succession. This drawing was based off of pencil drawings.
As for what leads to use, any in the higher B numbers - the softest I've used is like a 9B, but anything will work - you can always get a set and experiment to find what you really like.
Dude that is sweet please enter it!

Try to enlarge the image to at least 1020 x to what ever, they have to place it on canvas and it will lose quality.
That is sooo cool!!!! Thank you for animating my work.![]()

to the OP, i think you're pretty damn good to be honest. sure you need more practice, as does everyone in the field, and more variety but you definitely have what it takes as long as you have that drive to get better. i like how you're not necessarily outlining your work and using crosshatch to shade it in. realism is always better not outlined, so good job!
keep it up.
the charcoalsthey are a when it snaps in half, the fabel-castels are fkn overrated and expensive , you tried their oil/water color mark color pencils? they are okay for ur avg user the 12-24 set, or you can try the massive set if ur into it.
Paper is also important depending on what type of drawing your planning to do, whether its oil, water or normal drawings, the thickness and quality of paper is important...
i did art during highschool for 4yrs, but i prefer graphics..did that for 6yrs...drawing buildings and if my only forte, but freestyle art or copying another thing is not what im good at, i also hate fkn coloring the thing also...2hb/2b pencil and black fineliner is all you need.
any of you guys do freestyle art like spraycan and stencils? its very popular now these days...no im not talkin about graffiti bs.
Yeh charcoal works are a , expecially when you have ur own art book, and it smudges the back of the previous art page...and smudges on the current piece can be a also...
never really kept my highschool work or a port folio, but i prefer graphic design than art
can you post some of your work?
original poster good work but i ddn"t like the runners left hand the knuckles seem to heavy on the shade. is that normal?
