anyone know of which charchoals to use there is different kinds and which brands cuz there is those of bars, string, and pencil and etc and which other materials r good to make the shading better
I live with an art prof and her syllabi are on my computer. These are some (but not nearly all) of the supplies from here drawing I and II classes:

    General’s Graphite pencils – (2H, HB, 2B)
    Alphacolor Char-Kole
    General's charcoal pencils (2H, HB, 2B)
conte pencils - black and (sepia-optional)
    graphite sticks(optional)
tool or tackle box for storing and transporting materials
    reed pen
    Higgin's black ink
    Pelican sepia ink (optional)
    ink wash brushes
    compressed charcoal stick
    powdered charcoal
    permanent fixative
Compressed charcoal, Conte brand 2B, 3B
    12 soft Vine charcoal sticks
2 hard (compressed) black charcoal stick
Conte #2, #3 in shades of brown
    Assorted pencils: (1) 2H, (1) HB, (2) 2B, (1) 4B, (1) 6B

I don't know how particular she is about the brands of the supplies.

I think she does most of her ordering from Utrecht, sometimes Jerrys.

If you're really serious about pursuing drawing, my advice would be to

    1. study the works of the Old Masters

    2. explore what's happening in the contemporary art world by going to museums, galleries, and websites like this one

    http://www.drawingcenter.org/viewingprogram/index.cfm

    3. Draw what interests you most as often as you can.

I'll second Bartleby's suggestion of going to museums - looking at stuff online can be good, but there is no subs ute for seeing a work in person. Looking at something in the real world is where you can examine process, blending, texture, brushstroke, etc.

If you're in SA, I'd recommend heading over to the McNay - or, even better, get yourself over to Houston for the Menil Gallery, MFA, and Contemporary Arts Museum.

Try to enlarge the image to at least 1020 x to what ever, they have to place it on canvas and it will lose quality.
