Our SF rotation looks pretty good right about now...we got RJ starting, and off the bench we can go with a shooter/scorer in Fin or we can go with a defensive minded guy like Bogans, and if Hairston is active, we can go with him as well.
I'd be surprised if Hairston makes the cut after the Bogans signing. I expect Williams to beat out Hairston for the 15th, and final roster spot. He has another year of seasoning, is more skilled and versatile, and can supposedly play some point. Hairston would basically duplicate what Bogans brings.

training camp is going to be interesting..

I personally believe that Hairston will be a better player than Bogans this season and beyond, but as I said before, Malik is inexperienced and won't get many calls from the refs..Bogans is an experienced vet and will get some respect, so it's obvious who Pop would choose IMO..

They're pretty much the same size, they have the same shooting ability right now..the difference in ability is that Hairston's athleticism is levels better, so there's no reason he shouldn't outplay him..

I've been one of Hairston's biggest fans here, so I hope he can find a spot on the roster, but it doesn't seem likely right now, since it would probably depend on a Finley and/or Bonner trade now..

Hairston's gonna have to have a big training camp..
Do you think that referee "respect" will carry over to the replacement refs? I know some of them are ex-referees, but, I dont know. I always thought the biases were by certain refs for vets, not by the whole officiating group.

That's a great point from coyote..even if Manu goes down again, Mason will not be asked to fill his role..

Roger will be on the court with Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Richard Jefferson..he will NEVER have to handle the ball with that lineup, and he'll never have to create for anybody..he's going to receive PLENTY of open shots, and he'll be able to do what he does best..he was shooting around 45% from 3s before the PG experiment, and even after that, he ended up shooting 42% from 3s to end the year..there were only a handful of role players that shot better than 42% from 3-point range..you don't just give that away..

If you look back, there weren't really any complaints about Mason when Manu was in the lineup..the complaints clearly began when Manu went down, which forced Mason to play the 3rd option role, which he obviously wasn't fit to play..this limited him as a player, but there was nothing else Pop could have done anyways..we had a lack of versatility..we now have Jefferson, a legit all-star caliber player..we'll also be expecting the maturity of Hill, a player that has the tools to be a player that can create for himself..

Mason's role will be completely different..
I just wish Mason could drive without falling down or losing the ball. He is a perimeter guy only at this point. You miss having Manu pick up all those fouls when Mason is in there at SG.

Fouls aren't just guaranteed points when Manu is there, they work to hamper the other team's first string players and perhaps take them out of their game and the game.

    Gay.

I'd rather the spurs sign someone 6'7ish if we were looking for a player to ride the bench.
Finley is 6-7 and (hopefully) will ride the bench.

Maybe this means George will be playing most of his minutes at the 1?
That's what I was saying, and then some putz told me to 'stop posting'. Outside of having limited staff at the backup 1, I was looking forward to seeing if George could play some minutes at the 2. Kid can slash.

I don't think we can rule out Hill getting some minutes at the 2. There were times last year that Pop went with Hill and Parker on the court at the same time.

I know, but who runs the point for the second squad then this year? Manu, could I s'pose. Where's Brent Barry when you need him?

Hill primarily, but that was the case long before Bogans got here.

And unfortunately for Brent Barry, no one needs him anymore. He's pretty much done.

Finley is a gotta go! Bonner, as a sub, brings the 3 ball. Behind Jefferson the compe ion is huge. What does Pop want? If he has confidence in Haipslip at the 3 then the deal is done. If Mahimni sucks in camp we need to make another move. We are one move away from having a complete team for championship run!

Ya, I'm sure Hill would love the extended minutes, and being so young Pop could push him in ways he's not been accustomed to without the same wear.
Kidding about Barry, but maybe only half-kidding. As I recall, he ran point really well against the Lakers (when Pop would actually play him) in the 07/08 WCF. Still, I'd like to see us get a 3rd option at the 1 to give Hill a chance to figure out if he really is a combo guard on an NBA level, or if he needs to put all his effort into strictly the PG position.

Barry was great at point. He helped the Spurs out at that position on numerous occasions, Pistons 2005 being the most notable in my book.

I'm with you on the 3rd point guard. But if we're to believe the talk then the Spurs might think they already have that guy in Marcus Williams. In the end I'm not sure it affects Hill that much. The Spurs still want him to show that he can play PG at the NBA level. If he ends up proving an ability to be a combo guard along the way, all the better.

I think the Spurs look at their roster as 13 deep now with two spots open. Mahinmi's contract is technically guaranteed but I think he'll need to show something to avoid getting salary dumped somewhere. If he doesn't show improvement (or gets hurt again), I think he's gone.
    Yeah, that.

That. 14 guaranteed contracts means some youngsters going to/back to Austin. Marcus has done two years. Hairston's done one. McClinton and Gist would be d-league rookies. My money's on Williams, if they keep a 15th.

Meh. I doubt we see a trade before the season starts. No one is going to be in any kind of a hurry to take Finley off the Spurs hands. Pick 'em between Hairston and Williams (probably Williams), start the season and if a taker for Finley can be found during the season then bring the Hairston/Williams loser back then.
