I even think he deserves it. People don't understand how tough it is to have the kind of season he's had pitching in that ballpark.
Let's all get behind this Ranger fans.
I even think he deserves it. People don't understand how tough it is to have the kind of season he's had pitching in that ballpark.
Dude is a monster..abso-freaking-lutely he deserves it.
He's having a great year, but he trails too many guys in almost all of the major categories to have a realistic shot.
ERA is wayyy too high and innings pitched isn't high enough either.
Also no complete games will hurt as well.
great year for him but not over greinke felix verlander and halladay
Verlander's ERA is a bit high as well.
Felix Hernandez IMO might be it, but his win loss record is a bit low.
Greinke came back to earth and isn't the unhittable pitcher as he was.
Halladay? eh...
IMO, the guy that'll win it if he finishes strong is CC Sabathia.
It's Greinke's to lose.
Verlander's ERA is lower than Sabathia's and all the other numbers are similar except Verlander is way ahead in strikeouts. Sabathia's biggest edge is that he pitches for the Yankees and has a lot of national exposure. It's no coincidence he started piling more wins when the Yankee bats started providing him more run support. CC was 8-6 at the ASB. Now, he's 16-7 while the Yankees have been providing something like 7 runs a game for him since the break. He's been great, but I think Greinke and Halladay both deserve it more.
1. Greinke
2. Halladay
3a. Verlander
3b. King Felix
5. Sabathia
That's the thing though. Sabathia might win it even though statistically he probably falls behind four other pitchers. Feldman is nasty but all the points already made in this thread and the number of guys he has to leapfrog scream that he's more than a longshot to win it.
Greinke's ERA+ is up around 200 (EDIT: 197), best in the majors.
It's be a shame if he didn't win it strictly on his W/L record on a poor team.
Good points, but I think I'd be correct in saying that no other pitcher has been more important to his team's current success than Scott Feldman. Maybe that doesn't win you the Cy Young, but he absolutely deserves mention with the best in the AL.
Don't completely disagree with that, but that's an arbitrary thing to gauge. The Tigers would be in 4th place in their division without Verlander. He's had 20 quality starts. He leads the league in Ks. I don't know the exact number, but he has some crazy record after Tiger losses. Seems like he's stopped the bleeding quite a bit. But, how do you really compare which pitcher has meant more to the success of their team? Feldman accounts for 20.3% of the Rangers' wins. Verlander accounts for 21.3% of the Tigers' wins. Both teams had other starters step up at different points in the year, the Tigers with Edwin Jackson and Rick Porcello and the Rangers with Millwood early and Holland more recently.
I guess I would just challenge that no other pitcher has meant more. Hard to prove either way, but I'd take up for my guy in Verlander and say it's hard to argue against him too.
Feldman started the year in the bullpen and didn't do veary well his era as a starter is lower than what is era is pluse he has 12 road wins, but becuse of his time in the pen his innings piched is to low and that is what will stop him from takeing it home.
unless he shuts down the angles in meaning full games twice in the next few weeks than some of the espn guys may get on the bandwagon
I think Scott Feldman deserves the Cy Young more then Mark Teixeira deserves the MVP.
Probably hurt his chances tonight.
Matt Kemp for NL MVP.
Barring a meltdown in his last two starts, it has to be Grienke. He's been the best pitcher in the AL by any objective measure (i.e. stats that don't rely on run support).
Even in his losses and no-decisions, his ERA is 3.23. So, you could say that even at his worst, ZG has been better than Sabathia and Feldman.
It will be a shame if Greinke doesn't win the AL Cy Young. To pitch that well for a team that is that bad is remarkable.
In terms of run support from an offense, Greinke is leagues behind the other Cy Young hopefuls:
Average Run Support per 27 outs
6.09 -- Sabathia
4.78 -- Verlander
4.73 -- Feldman
4.31 -- Hernandez
3.75 -- Greinke
He's 15-8 in large part because he's "lost" 4 games this season in which his team scored 1 run or fewer to go along with 2 no decisions in those cir stances. Of those 6 games, 4 have been opponents' shutouts.
And it's not like he's pitched poorly and made the lack of run support irrelevant in those cir stances. In those 6 games (in which he's gone 0-4), Greinke has allowed a total of 7 earned runs:
5/9/09 -- LOSS 1-0 (1 er) at Angels
7/3/09 -- LOSS 5-0 (2 er) v. White Sox
7/8/09 -- LOSS 3-1 (3 er) at Tigers
7/24/09 -- LOSS 2-0 (1 er) v. Rangers
8/14/09 -- N/D 1-0 (0 er) at Tigers
9/5/09 -- N/D 2-1 (0 er) v. Angels
He's also left 3 other games after 6+ innings with a lead and took no decisions because the Royals' pen couldn't hold the lead.
Greinke pitches on a crappy, crappy team, he leads the AL in ERA, Shutouts, WHIP, Hits/9, HR/9, and ERA+.
He's 6th in Wins, 3rd in K/9, 5th in Innings Pitched, 2nd in Strikeouts, and 2nd in Complete Games.
He has been the best pitcher in the AL this season, despite pitching for a team that is going to lose 95 games.
He deserves the Cy Young Award.
The baseball community is just now starting to realize that "wins" is one of the worst stats that you can use to judge a pitcher's effectiveness. Not completely worthless, but far below ERA, WHIP, K/9, BB/9, K/BB, etc...
Greinke's 2009 season would seem to be the poster child for that movement, given that he's:
1st in ERA
1st in WHIP
1st in K/9
6th in BB/9
2nd in K/BB
Greinke's behind Verlander in K/9 but I agree it would be a shame if Greinke didn't win the CY. He's by far the most deserving this year.
Greinke deserves it the most. But baseball loves to jerk off big markets so sabbathia might steal it. Politics.
Greinke for AL CY
Wainwright for NL Cy.
Wainwright isn't even the best pitcher in the Cardinals rotation this year. He leads Carpenter in wins and strikeouts, but Carpenter's better in almost every single other category.
My bad.
Should have read my own preceding post in which I noted that Greinke was 3rd in the AL in K/9.
Innings pitched...
Carpenter missed too much time and doesn't have enough strikeouts.
